Safe to remap 2.0 tdi a4?

    Hey,
Was thinking of remapping my 2.0 tdi a4 but just wondering would it be safe bearing in mind the possible issues associated with the blb engines. I'm not specifically after more power, but rather the extra mpg. I don't tend to murder the throttle anyway, I drive sensibly enough for a 26 year old. I enquired about the price with TDR performance and it's reasonable enough. Is it possible to tune the car in a way that isn't a pure power boost but rather a balance between extra power and extra economy?? Or would you guys not recommend it at all?? Thanks in advance!

I worked with Joe from TDR and he'll be straight with you, if he thinks there'll be an issue he'll tell you and I've seen him turn cars away that he thinks will give issues. Top bloke and top work tbh

Your only regret when you get it done is that you didn't do it sooner

I'd give a thumbs up to ringing Joe Power. Have a chat with him over the phone, and hell go through everything with you.

I had my Octavia mapped with him in October after much procrastination, and I'm delighted with the results.

    This is anecdotal, but anyway:

I remapped my golf from 130 to 160 with a very reputable irish company AFTER replacing my clutch.

The new clutch would slip if I put the foot down in 4th gear upwards.

Not worth it in my opinion (again this is just my isolated experience).

Points to an issue with the clutch rather than the map, if a new clutch can't handle 160BHP there's something wrong there

As Gary said, Sounds like a clutch not up to the job

Go for it OP. The remap will not have any bearing on the reliability issues with the 2.0TDI engine.

I also recommend Joe Power highly.

Have my 3 Series remapped since last July, no issues with it and I'm glad I got it done, it transforms the car. The car will still have the same top speed but the increased torque in the lower gears means it will feel quicker getting there.

I very excited now... Do you find it affects the fuel consumption??

My fuel consumption is pretty similar to before the remap. If you have a heavy right foot then it will naturally suffer.

+1. The first few weeks, it's gonna suffer. Basically cos you'll be enjoying the extra torque!!! But after that, it should be about the same/ slightly better.

I use the fuelcubby app, and it shows my consumption spiking upwards for a while. But now, it's pretty much consistent with what I was doing before the map.

I can live with that! It's not like it's a guzzler now anyway... I noticed that it much prefers long journeys though, shorter journeys tend to go harder on the fuel...

You will have smother quiter car normal driving but a lot of torque and acceleration when overtaking or just going for aburn you will have torque limiters removed also my buddy with a4 has seen fuel increase although only 2 to 3 mpg i have no increase in mpg but knew this would be the case after talking to joe but it is a very different more enjoyable car to drive

Sure what more could i ask for then?? Im a total newbie so when i got the quote i was very impressed... If its going to improve the driving experience as much as ive heard well then thats a cheap price to pay! Rang the man himself today anyway and most likely will be getting it done either next tuesday or next friday, depending on my financial situation ha!

Thinking of doing this too sometime this year.
Obvious question - should one inform your insurance company when getting this done? Do insurance companies even know what it means? I'd imagine the word "modifications" would set off alarm bells with them surely? I know a remap can be undetectable, but still...

    Yes, one should inform them.

How much does this cost? Obviously it varies with model but for say an (a4/octavia)

And how do they typically react? I'd expect either a clueless reaction or a randomly generated hike in the premium...

I really hope it's not goin to bump up the premium too much...

I have it in the back of my mind to get a remap done on a '03 1.9 tdi Audi, 100bhp.

FBD advised today that if this is remapped to 130bhp there would be no effect on the premium. They would need a letter from the garage doing the work confirming that the work has been carried out correctly - I asked what this was for and they said that it was a standard requirement for any modification. The agent I dealt with said that she understood that it was to show that the work had been carried out by someone who knew what they were doing/was qualified.

They were quite good to deal with - when I queried it yesterday afternoon the agent admitted she didn't know enough about it and would have to query it with their specialist in head office. She was back to me by 10.30 this morning with the answer.

Fair play, that's very useful to know.

I got my 2006 A4 1.9tdi remapped by Joe at Chippedire about two weeks ago. He put it on the Dyno (rolling road) my bhp before was 117bhp. And after modification about 145bhp. It now runs a lot smoother and sharper. Its like the car has become alive. Its much sharper in the lower gears and delivers power much more quickly in the higher gears too.

Joe is sound and able to answer any question on anything i asked. I would highly recommend him. My car is now much more fun to drive.

I might get a pain in my neck here looking upwards at all these jockeys on their moral high horses, but why would you tell your insurance company about a remap?

That's creating hassle where there is none.I'm not entering into a debate on this as i can probably pre-empt the people who will reply and their answers but it's joe duffy-ism of the highest order.

Get it mapped and drive it on and enjoy it,the map is untraceable and invisible to the untrained eye (i included main dealers in this as when it comes to cars there is no eye more untrained than that of a main dealer),also insurance assessors esp in this country haven't a clue what they are looking at when it comes to cars and engine bays etc - cows looking at thunder.
