Volvo V70 (1997) Remote Issue

Hi, recently i've had trouble with my remote key fob. The only way i can describe it, is that the fob is eating batteries. Unfortunately i only have one (original) key fob. My car is a 1997 V70 2.3 T5 with 170000mls.

I'm assuming the fob/circuit board is shagged at this stage and is discharging the battery and needs replacing. After hours of searching the net i came across 2 suggestions...

    1. Buy OEM fob off ebay, reprogram fob by turning ignition key on 5 times and pressing buttons etc. (according to some volvo forums)

    2. Car needs to go to main dealer and they reprogram a new fob with their expensive 'software' equipment.

Any budding enthusiast or mechanic shed any guiding light on my pride n joy?

Might be worth a post on matthewsvolvosite and run with option #1. Nice car BTW, we have a 98 T5 with 216,000 miles on it.
