First thing to watch out for is rust. Don't believe the crap you read about these cars being galvanised - they can rust badly.

Sills are a weak point - examine the area where the sill meets the rear wheel arch carefully. Bring a torch, and remove the plastic trim clip underneath the door receivers, and look down into the void where the door pillar meets the sill. If you have small hands, put them in and have a poke around.
There is often advanced corrosion lurking here. Also be aware that the rear axle tube hanger is in the same area, and can be pretty rotten too.
Rectifying this will cost a lot of money.

Be on the lookout for crash damage - these cars have been driven hard, and accident damage is likely.

Other biggie to watch for is any knocks in the transmission. Any clunks on acceleration/deceleration could well be the rubber component in the clutch if its the original clutch. A clutch replacement on these is a big labour intensive job.

Service history is a must. Engines are strong, but need regular cambelt and balancer shaft belt replacements. Also, belt tension on these is critical. Its normal to replace the water pump at the same time.

They are a great car if you get a good one, a money pit if you get a bad one...

You should open the boot and say "Someone's stolen the engine!"
