Well folks, the clutch is gone in my fathers van.. Thing is he's gone to London & he's supposed to be getting the boat back tomorrow evening from holyhead.. so a kind of a disaster really:mad: How much would it cost for a new clutch to be fitted? Would it be the flywheel gone,or the master cylinder?
there is 147k miles on it by the way.
The clutch wasn't showing any signs of wear/slipping etc.
    Any advice welcome.:)

work not cheap on them, as there is disaster get gearbox off, but any good garage will be able to do the work. 200-250 euro for labour id say, clutch kit could be 170-200. As far as i know they have slave cylinder inside gearbox, descent garage will check it also, I would suggest change that bloody thing also, as it gives trouble, and to replace it, its a gearbox off job, will save some money in future.

Not a chance in hell will you get a clutch done on one of those vans for €400-€450 in a garage.

There is a full days labour at least involved before you buy any parts and its very likely that a flywheel will be needed as well.

is the flywheel really expensive like a dmf?

It'll be twice as expensive(at least) as the clutch itself. These also use a concentric slave cylinder which should be replaced together with the clutch.

see a clutch kit on micksgarage is €297 just for the clutch:eek: probably won't have any change out of €1000 so?

That will be the 2 piece kit(pressure plate and clutch disk) so check the price of the slave cylinder and flywheel too. Then add 8 hours min for a decent indy garage at between €50 and €70(estimated) per hour.

Parts and labour will be cheaper in the UK but it still won't be a cheap job.

one my friend with renault traffic was changing clutch with slave cylinder in Co, Louis with highly recommended mechanics for 450 .. all in.

I had offer to do that job, but wouldnt fancy do it on drive way, there must be a lift. deffo, in uk will be cheaper parts and labour.

The previous model Trafic has a book time of 9 hours to do a clutch

We can do it in 4 hours or so but it's a major PITA and you'd never do it without a lift. Hate them with a passion

Going off topic but has anyone had to actually replace a worn clutch on one of these as opposed to replacing it for good measure when the slave was leaking?
Reason I ask is that I look after a good few with towbars and havent seen one slip yet... could be lucky!

It's the slave cylinder alright, a mechanic had a look at it before he went this morning

Any chance of driving it home without the clutch? I have first hand experience of being stuck in the UK with a busted van looking for a mechanic to get me out and it is a nightmare. Had to drive a Ducato from outside London to Holyhead with no clutch - getting to Holyhead was bad enough but do-able, but getting up the ramp into the ferry was hell. Was never so happy to see DunLaoighaire in my entire life. Crashing a van throught the gears is a skill usually aquired unwillingly!

oh yes,;) he said in the traffic it was a **** with the constant stopping and starting, but when he got onto the motorway it was grand:phe managed the ramp anyway :pac:

HaHa, good man, needs must eh! On another trip over there the alternator went and I'd no dosh for a battery(let alone an alternator). I reckoned I'd about three starts left before the battery died so just drove direct to fishguard and sat in the van with the engine off all night in the depths of winter conserving my two remaining starts -1. to drive up the ramp and 2. to start and get off the ferry. Nearly froze to death! The van did start on the ferry but I had to drive from Dublin port to kildare at 5.30 in the morning with just the hazards left working - that trip cured me of cross-sea adventures in vans, almost ....:D
