Advice? Change your instructor! They really should be able to answer all your questions if they are any good.

From what my instructor has told me and from reading the 'get it' book then the typically things you could get marked on for faults usually be for coasting, not using the clutch and gears properly, not braking properly i.e not progressively braking before coming to a stop, causing an obstruction, swinging wide, not in the correct lane and position, not keeping left on straight, too close to parked cars when passing vehicles on the street, lack of observation, not using mirrors enough or using mirrors incorrectly, not aware of hazards, not stopping at a stop sign even when clear (automatic fail/grade3).

Not progressing i.e moving off when you should say at a junction, roundabout or turn, passing through red and or solid amber light (instant fail/grade3), not stopping correcting at the line and in the incorrect position, too close to left/centre line, not anticipation, being hesitant, they be the typical things but you could get too many of oral questions and technical stuff wrong you could get a grade 2 fault.

Not keeping up with flow of traffic. Not keeping to reasonable speed, over or under, going too slow or two fast, dangerous driving, generally keep to the speed limit at the speed zones like at 30zone get to 30mph hour unless traffic conditions dictate otherwise. Not complying to signals, road markings and road signs. Maybe being too quick off the clutch could be a fault not certain but coasting would be a fault I say.

Mounting the kerb you get a fail/grade 3 fault straight away. Though bumping the kerb say when parking or reversing/turnabout you might be ok you just get a grade 2 fault I say.

Lack of all round observation when completing the manoeuvres, not using mirrors and indicators when appropriate. Not going when safe to go/gap in traffic, moving off when not safe, Signalling too soon/too late you might get faulted for that might be a grade 1 fault not sure if not it be a grade 2 fault as you are misleading the driver behind you. Not being aware of cyclists.

Do not weave in and out of parked cars when over taking, give reasonable clearance, over taking dangerously, stopping on a clearway/junction box in traffic with the exception you can stop on it when taking a right turn as long as you are not causing an obstruction. No stopping for pedestrians or stopping car too close to pedestrian crossing. Try not to wave/beckon on pedestrians, cyclists or other drivers you could be faulted for that.

Common reasons for failure of test:

There is a link here from the RSA how faults are measured.

Best of luck with your test!
