I'm glad you like the site lads, feel free to register and post some photos in the aircraft photography section.
There is also a Military airband section. We had a U2 spyplane spotted on the Mode s last week. No position of course but we got on the list heading East.

I'm using a Wimo Antenna. To be honest I only gained a small amount of range with it but its well made and able to withstand the elements.

I suppose location is important, I have my SBS installed in another house and its operated remotely, so i have the benefit of a good location even though its not my house ;)

Thanks mac, nice site. Your original link seems to be broken now, but this one works.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Messed up website so had too restore a backup from Sunday :(
    Apologies to anyone affected.
New users who registered after on or after Sunday will have to re register.

New additions to the site are a Cork & Dublin Port operations stream
    Shanwick Oceanic ATC 5598Khz

    www.airwavesireland.com

And I hope to get a Cork ATC stream over the next few weeks.

Just confirming you can monitor Mode S? Not just ADS-B. The thing I fly has mode S but not ADS-B. So would it appear.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 298 ✭✭mac80

    Yes Mode-S also.
If your mode-s transmitter is transmitting your positional data then it will appear, if not then it will just appear on the list on the right hand side ( same as Military and some small civil stuff )

    Mac

Ok thanks, look forward to seeing it, unless I'm flying.

I have added mobile compatible links for as many of the streams as possible.
The streams should play automatically on Android devices ( using Flash )

I have also changed the Shanwick ATC stream to 5649Khz as 5598 was too noisy.
5649 is a decent frequency as you can get Shanwick during the day and Gander in the evening :)

I can programme it to change frequency depending on the time of day of anyone has any better more active frequencies.

In an effort to kick start the forum, regular contributors will be rewarded with access to the Private streams ( Currently Dublin & Rosslare CG, others coming )

If a user has 50 or more posts and is deemed by the forum MOD's to be an active member of the forum who contributes on a Regular basis then access to the private streams will be granted to that user.

    http://www.airwavesireland.com/index.php/forum/2-members-introductions/337-members-access-to-private-streams#337

I hope to have another Airband stream online in next few weeks

First of all, that's a great site mac80.

I am wondering can anyone help me with the following:

I live on an elevated site in Mallow. I was thinking of gettingn a wimo antenna and putting it on the roof linked to a cheap SBS box, in the hope of capturing traffic into Cork, Shannon and Kerry as well as overfilghts. If I do this will i get better results than flightradar 24 or the other radar sites in terms of range/ coverage etc.

What type of range can i expect?

I am wondering does anyone know where i could buy a Kinetic SBS-1eR box? Ebay, amazon etc don't seem to do them. The SBS 3 box is a bit over my budget or can anyone reccommend a similarly priced box to the SBS 1.

Any advice feedback would be appreciated.

Coverage is very hard to predict. Using an ADS-B receiver you can expect to get line of sight only. This varies depending on the aircraft height and your antenna height ASL.

I use a RadarBox and Radarmax antenna and get about 150nm
Any obstructions such as surrounding tree's or hill's affect range greatly.
I have been told to use better cable ( I use RG213 )

The MicroADSB sticks look quite good value for money http://46.40.125.13:8000/

thanks liffey 4A. I will look into the MicroADSB sticks . Never even knew they existed. They seem handy. Just worried I will spend a few hundred quid and end up with results less than what i can get on the internet for free.

Hi 69c, just to let you know there is another radar box on the market namely the RadarGadget Box which i use myself with a RadarRama external antennae. The average coverage is 150 nm approx. The price is higher than the MicroADSB. If you join Planeplotter sharing you will have as good coverage as FlightRadar 24 or maybe better. Best of luck.

    John.
