Lets face it MOST people think they are great drivers..... Here's an opportunity to put up or shut up.

A competition tomorrow around 4 of Irelands kart tracks to find a race driver for the 2012 Irish Touring Car Championship. Everything laid on for t he winner - including car, crew, entry fees etc. Prize is valued at €30k

I'm gonna go to the Dublin one in Kylemore Karting. Its just €100 to enter on the day

Its €100 to enter a skill based competition that could result in a €30k prize. Of course if you don't think you are good enough it might appear expensive

This actually is a great chance for people to get into the sport for cheap. If it was a bit closer to me, or if I had more notice I'd definitively give it a shot.

Isn't there anything for more amateurs.
When I used to live in Poland there were small events organized quite often, where everyone could take part for a small fee in his own car. Something like mini-rally-SS.

Something in the OP's set me off on a memory trail and I was reminded of Gilles Villeneuve (father of Jacques) the legendary Canadian F1 driver

Ten years ago Id have been all over this. Not having sat in kart in a long time I think Id only depress myself how much Ive slowed down since I was 15...

Is there going to be actual racing....just seems a little unfair as weight plays a big role when racing Karts compared to racing cars.
Also, I know from having done karting many times, that your race can be ruined by the inconsistency in the quality of each kart...(some handle terribly, some have no brakes, some have awful steering etc...)

It's a chance for _A_ person to get into the sport for cheap.

Now, in saying that, if you were only going to spend the €100 in the pub anyway, you've got nothing to lose by giving it a shot.

Also I've been in the galway track recently enough, there's not a hope that is going to be a fair competition. I doubt you'd get 16 karts the same in there, and with 16 on that track it'll be nothing short of chaos.

Hi Fletch

There are weight categories so you will only be racing against people of a very similar weight. 16 people per category only!

There is heats, semi finals and finals at the karting stage. So you will be driving a selection of karts over the event.

The Mondello shoot out stage is in race saloons where weight is not a factor.

Yeah Id actually love to get back into karting again, and I plan on going when I get a week off. I think the fact that Im about 8 stone heavier than I was when I used to go regularly might slow me down somewhat!

Don't know why the OP is getting such a hard time. If it was free or dirt cheap anyone would show up just to get a blast in that car. Anyone who is serious about their track diving ability it might be worth them having a go at this and seeing where they lie in compared to other good drivers.

Here is the format of the event.

Saturday March 24th:
Each province holds a karting competition at a local kart track

Each karting competition has 4 weight categories

There are a maximum of 16 entrants per weight category

You ONLY race against people of your own weight category

You will get a practice session

Each competitor gets 4 heats, starting each one from each of the 4 grid slots

4 karts per heat

After the heats your points score is added up

The top 12 points scorers progress to the semi finals in a seeded system. 6 per race

Semi Finals are scored at a higher rate than the heats but the total is accumulative. In other words, your heats score is added to your semi final score

The top 6 points scorers at this point progress to the final, with the competitor who has most points starting from pole and so on down

The final is worth double points (compared to the heats)

The winner will be the person, who at the end of the event (final) has the most points. This may or may not be the winner of the final.


SUNDAY MARCH 25th
The winner of each weight category, from each province will go to Mondello Park. (Total of 16 people)

There they will drive Mondello Parks race school cars on circuit under the observation of instructors and judges.

They will also undergo some off track skills tests, such as media skills etc

They will be scored based on speed, consistency, mechanical sympathy, media skills etc

The winner will be declared after tallying up the points scored during the day and be presented with his/her race car for the 2012 season

I'd love a go at that. But I'd be crap no doubt!

You don't get to drive the "scangerised race car" for €100 You enter a very fun karting competition for what seems like reasonable money. The finalists then get another day out racing in Mondello and the winner gets over 30k euro worth of sponsorship in the form of a track car / team / mechanics / race fees etc etc.

Awe, all the Leinster 66kg-80kg places are booked up, I'd have done this otherwise defo! Or would they let me do the 66kg down ha, I'd be giving myself a disadvantage.

I took a 10year hiatus and came back to gearbox racing in '09 You'd be surprised how quickly you'll find pace again. For sure do a practice session or two beforehand but as they say, it's like riding a bike, you never loose it. Biggest limiter will be your fitness if that's changed (mine did so I had to work on that), but your mind will step up pretty quick. It's pretty amazing.

My thoughts exactly. Whenever I go go-karting, I think i'm doing pretty damn good, but everyone I go with is bloody brilliant!

But we all know it's the 3 point turns and parallel parking that gets the ladies.

What a day - we couldn't have asked for better weather or a tighter competition. There was less than 1 second between the top 10 in terms of laptime and the 4 independent corner judges all scored each car (no one knew who was in what car) in pretty much the same order.

Here is a picture of the finalists at Mondello Park today with the car on offer



And most importantly here is the winner, John Greaney who qualified from the Ulster round after traveling from his home county of Wicklow, due to his category being sold out in Dublin. John is 20 years of age and has never competed in anything before. Not only did he receive the top score by the 4 on track judges he also had the fastest lap and performed well in the media test. In just 3 weeks John will be on the grid for his first ever car race in the ITCC at Mondello Park
