    hi all,

looking at buying a 2006 1.4d4d corolla with 78k on the clock, its a T3 spec

whats it worth im guessing 6k privately 6.5k from a garage?

anything in particular that I should look for when i go to see it, rang about it and am told its perfect, photos look good etc

local mechanic was doing the servicing so no FSH, and appears to be a genuine reason for car being sold

    any known weaknesses in these?

    all info appreciated

With it being a UK import and having no service history it should be assummed that it's been clocked. If it has previous NCT receipts with odometre readings it will help verify. With history I think €6k, perhaps get it for €5-5.5k.

A 06 Corolla diesel hatch in T3 spec with relatively low mileage is very sought after. I'd agree with the 6k private / 6.5k garage pricing. Not a hope of getting a decent one for 5k I would think.

If it's ex uk then service history is a must. Without service history or old MOTs, I'd assume the mileage is incorrect. Very few cars in UK have no service histories, but many seem to "lose" the service histories on the boat.

where does it say in the first post that it was imported?

The T3 spec wasn't sold here but was sold in UK, therefore it had to have been imported. Also is almost certainly a hatchback because Corolla saloons very rare if sold at all in UK (I think no corolla saloons sold in UK).

    T3 is an English spec

thats funny the comment T3s were never sold here, according to the person selling its an irish car, he is the second owner and has it advertised as a T3, maybe its simply a T2 with a few add ins

it does have alloy wheels under it

what are the features that are specific to a T3 anyone know

I know the reg of the car is it possible for me to figure out if it came from England from this?

If it is badged T3 it's UK spec. Have you a link to the advert?

this is also labelled as T3

    is this also a misadvertisment?

running a search on donedeal for corolla D4d T3 quite a few results pop up

    Irish Corolla specs were:

    Terra
    Strata
    Luna
    Sol

Looks like a Strata model to me judging by the little symbol below the D4D badge on the boot, which would be the Irish equivilant of a T3 in the UK. The easiest way to tell if it is a UK car is that the speedometer on a 06 will be in mph/kph. Irish cars from 2005 only came with kph speedometers.

It really looks like she is clueless about what model it is and how to take photos for an advert.

If it's T anything it's UK, as was said you can check if speedo is in miles and also UK specs have the Toyota UK Helpline number etched in to bottom of all the windows of the car. Looking at the late 2006 Cork reg number it's an import for sure, can't see anyone putting a T3 badge on an Irish car, nothing to gain.

    .

You cant rely on this all the time, my fathers van he bought new in 06 was obviously an 04model regged in 06, its speedo is in mph/kph.
I told him about this at the time (it doesnt have abs either which the 06 one did) but he didnt care:rolleyes:

found these in an old thread

    Here's a quick run through:

Terra 02-04 (3/5 dr Hatch, Estate or Saloon) : Elec wins, elec mirrors, abs, 2 airbags, cd,

Terra 04-06 (3/5 dr Hatch, Estate or Saloon) : Remote locking, Elec wins, elec mirrors, abs, 4 airbags, cd,

Strata 04-06 (3/5 dr hatch only) adds to Terra: Alloys, Fogs, rear and side skirts, leather wheel & gearknob, and audio switches

06 Luna (1.4 VVT-i 5dr Hatch only) adds to Strata: Cimate Control, rear elec wins, armrest.

06 Luna (petrol or diesel, Saloon only) adds to Terra: Air Conditioning, Heated Mirrors, Alloys, Fogs. Rear elec windows.

02-05 Luna (3/5 door hatch and Saloon) adds to Terra, Aircon, Alloys, Fogs.

    this is the old thread

where is the badging under D4d? ie if its an import will it have T3 under D4D

It was probably imported originally by Buckley in Mitchelstown. He imports them by the bucketload and there's many on the road up this way.

Yes it's normally located under the D4D badge, see below...

I wouldn't let the fact that it's an import put you off but if you can't verify the miles on it for its time in the UK I wouldn't touch it.

Is that a T3 badge or is it a strata badge or is photo not close enough to tell?

your comment on import is dead on I think reflects exactly my thinking

Yes it's the T3 badge. I think the Strata is more a logo rather than text or atleast it used to be.

The Irish Corolla had a symbol type badge with a planet on it like below the Corolla or D4D name. Terra, Strata, Luna and Sol all representing the Earth, Moon and Sun.

    Full-10527805.jpeg

Also most UK spec models had air con, it was only on the Luna and Sol models here.

Strata had the option of aircon alright. Bizzarely we sold a good few with ac as you couldn't get diesel lunas till they started running the model out in 06

many thanks for all the comments on how to ID wheither it is a UK car or not, I must contact the seller

what were the weak points on these at 78k miles what would need to be replaced

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 890 ✭✭✭lifer_sean

If I picked up on the correct donedeal advert (the black one in Tipperary that needed a wash !), then cartell says it's a colour collection, which is yet another UK spec, and was a lesser spec than the T3.

The colour collection badge was kinda similar to the shape of the Irish badges. A quick look at the car should sort it all out !

The last of the T3's (06/07) had the updated centre console and I think had climate control air con, whereas the earlier ones had plain air con.

Re. weak points - CV joints, gearbox bearings, not much else.

CV joints are a quick easy fix

gearbox bearings- does this mean a reconditioned gearbox or is it a simple job to replace the bearings

family has a few of the vvti corollas and a few of them have had gearboxes replaced with ones from scrapped ones

PS yes the one from tipperary that needs a wash is the one Im interested in

one last thing- other than body panels whats the difference between these and a 1.4d4d auris-engine is the same i presume how about gearbox?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,479 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Better off with a a reconditioned box rather than a second hand one from a scrap yard. The second hand one might have the same issue and last you a wet week.

Auris replaced that model Corolla hatchback. My father has an Auris and the Corolla before it was a superior car imo.

CV joints were main dealer only a few years back (factor ones didn't last) but now the factor ones are fine. Had to do an inner CV joint on a petrol 05 with low-ish miles a while back which would be unusual for most car makes.

I don't know for sure if the engine and boxes are same between Corolla and Auris. I'd expect very similar but not identical. There are some funny combinations that are interchangeable, eg I'm told the gearbox from a new shapre (07 onwards) corolla will go into a 04 Avensis.

Usual problem with Toyota boxes are bearings, and would need to be removed/split. Easy to do for someone who is used to them. Some of the Avensis gearbox bearings can be done with the box in place, don't know about Corolla D4D. Had an Auris D4D with a noisy box a while back (approx 50k miles) but Toyota did it under warranty so didn't bother to ask the details as to what bearings were changed. I have a vague memory that a modified bearing was fitted.
