Why is the dial so small in such a massive watch. It's quite hideous.

Agreed, that dial would make baby Jesus cry. :(

I presume it's so small and the case is so large to combat 12,000m BSL
    14.3mm crystal on it

not sure I'd want a watch with "RING LOCK SYSTEM" engraved like that ;)

Would love to see a wrist shot though :D

I guess the challenge is to find someone who likes the design?

Though with Rolex M that's usually not much of a challenge. It's the marque where all bets are off with collectors. Where the same watch with red instead of white writing on the dial can add 100's of 1000's of euros to the price. Now I'm as anal as the next guy* but Rolex collectors are off the scale on that score and enough of them are (very) rich enough to pay the privilege for that.

For me personally M I have the same feelings towards Rolex as I do towards Mercedes cars. I can barely tell them apart in general and while I appreciate the history and quality(though on the latter...) they just don't light my fire. Even so I have to be honest I kinda like the look of that one. Not the original vintage one, though. It's hideous to my eyes.

*I got the final piece in my recent triumvirate of vintage every few years and hopefully cheap arse madness. :o I spent an hour yesterday bringing it's original 1916 era strap back from the leathery grave with various unctions and potions and dark arts. I need help. Medical help. :D Pics to follow...

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Wasn't it made for James Cameron to wear in his submarine "Deepsea Challenger" when he dives the Marianas trench? No suprise that JC would be into something massively overblown like this, is there?

Surprise he didn't choose to dive into the Titanic

I don't see the point in him wearing the watch. Sure any watch from argos would survive if it was kept in the sub. Surely this thing will be strapped on to the sub outside.

He visited Titanic many times while filming for the movie. It is said he has spent more time round the ship than the actual passengers who sailed on it!

James Cameron is the perfect brand ambassador for this watch, the guy is king of the overblown, overhyped but ultimately pointless! The irony is that his movies tend to look great but lack substance, which is the complete opposite the watch!

Seriously though, is there a real point to the high water resistance of any dive watch? The depth limit for recreational scuba diving is 40m and the absolute limit for air diving is 70m. The world record for a scuba dive is around 300m. Besides, scuba divers tend not to wear Rolexes, Omegas etc when they dive, they wear digital dive timers from the likes of Suunto etc.

I think it's a test of watch seals but unless your actually in the water what is the point.

That has to be the thickest watch I've ever seen.

I would say the glass has to have a good thickness to width ratio for withstanding extreme depths.
