Decided to do the 80km leg of the tour de connemara in May and would like some advice as the best way to go about training for it. So far my longest distance has been 45km so I probably need to up that to 60km in order to be able for 80km?

This will be my first sportif so am looking forward to the challenge it will be for me. I know it's not a big distance to some of ye but I'm just delighted to be able to do some form of exercise again.

Yeah looking forward to it. Wonder are there many hills on the 80km route? Think I read its pretty flat overall.

When the clocks go forward you should go for a spin a few evenings a week. Cooler and relaxing.

I'm training for something similar but I'm a little further on than yourself.

I'm doing the 100k KARE Tour de Foothills in April and eventually hope to get to the 160k Sean Kelly Tour in August.

At the moment I train by time rather than distance (speedo is knackered) but I basically do 2 x short spins and 1 x long spin every week. So, for you maybe 2 x 1 hour (moderate effort) and 1 x 2.5 hour spin (easy) a week. Try and slowly increase your long sping and when you can comfortably do 3 hours a couple of times you should have no problem managing 80km.

I find that the 2 short spins are just as important as the long one so don't skip them as I did starting out. One long spin once a week is no use as your legs just lose the habit of going around in circles (for want of a better explanation).

Good luck with it and enjoy.

As well as the advice above, is there any chance that you could cycle into work even one day per week? I'm also in training and I started doing that yesterday for the first time. Cycled in this morning and so far I'm really enjoying it. Of course, I have showers in work which makes it easier.
