I have a mate who is computer illiterate who came to me (a car illiterate) to see if I can source a replacement engine for a Ford Mondeo which is over heating repeatedly.

It's an '04 Petrol Automatic if that makes a difference (I kinda presume it does).

Can any kind soul out there point me towards where to start looking for a replacement engine? Is there an Adverts.ie for engines?? :)

I figured asking on my own creation might be a good start (I rarely get to use the motors forum... It's nice in here, kinda smells of fuel though... :p)

Many thanks in advance and sorry if I have broken any rule about asking for engines or something :) (I'll probably get banned for this :) )

http://www.traynors.co.uk/ would be a place to get a price on an engine.
We can take it that your mate has had a diagnosis from a mechanic?

Yes, and he got it fixed but he's of the opinion that he's better off replacing the engine. Full Disclosure, he's a cabbie (please don't hate me :) ) and a busted engine is a big deal for his income so he reckons it might be best to replace the whole thing.

Seems a bit extreme to replace the whole engine but it depends on the mileage and what work was already carried out on the problem.
Could be water pump, thermostat stuck (replacement guide http://fordwiki.co.uk/index.php?title=Thermostat_replacement), blocked radiator core, or faulty cooling fan (if overheating when stationary), some sensor or the ecu reading the sensors.

To get an idea of the actual temperatures, pop up the dash diagnostics http://www.fordwiki.co.uk/index.php?title=Instrument_Cluster_Self-Diagnostic_Mode. Once warmed up, the temperature should fluctuate between 90 and 105°C, controlled by the thermostat. If you floor the throttle, it should drop below this range as the ECU fully opens the thermostat to accommodate the imminent potential heat-up if you keep your foot down.

Does seem a bit extreme to me alright. I'll ask him more specifically why replace the whole thing. He seemed to think it was the best action for the long term but I'll press him on it.
That temp thing is pretty awesome... But what's Ignition Position II... Is that "on" (:))

Many thanks mate, that's a great help because it seems like he's afraid of it overheating... Now I can hack his car to show him the temp!

And just remind your friend that if it is a radiator or fan issue, he risks doing this all again with the new engine.

Ok, so he had the fan and the radiator checked and its not them. It was the gasket cylinder head (if that makes sense) and its been replaced, but the engine is still over heating so its become urgent to find a replacement.

Where (either online or offline) can we buy a second hand engine?? Any recommendations?

    Many thanks!

    try www.partfinder.ie, might help.

Mondeo 1.8 petrol engines can be problematic and hard to get. A mate has a breakers yard and says these sell like hot cakes. You might have a bit of a search on your hands.

could also try kilcock dismantlers in kilcock.

They have a website, best bet is to phone though as they are rubbish with emails.

    http://kilcockcardismantlers.com/

    All parts available for sale.

I have seen some fantastic motors out there, was only there on say to pic up some bits for the gf nissan.

OP, it might be worth your friend's while looking into getting the head skimmed?

I'd be reluctant to buy a second hand Mondeo engine without knowing it's history, Some of them have a tendancy to use quite abit of oil.

I'd be inclined to try fix teh overheating issue with the existing engine if that's the only problem.

If he really wants an engine Traynors is the best bet from a price perspective, They deliver to Dublin twice a week, I'd also give summerhill spares a call, They would supply or supply and fit and are usually quite reasonable with their prices, They may even offer some warranty on a supply and fit but I'm not certain about that.

When your mate finds and new engine, tell him to find a new mechanic too as if the head gasket went and was repaired and now the engine is still over heating, then it simply wasn't diagnosed or repaired properly.
