It says on the latest RSA "preparing for your driving test" booklet that on the day of the test among the normal things (hill start, reverse around a corner etc) that you will be assessed in parking?! I have never heard of this my instructor has never mentioned it to me, is this just a formality that is never checked?

I think they're just looking for awareness pulling off\in and how close you are to the kerb.

Ya I think its just the case of pulling up near the kerb and moving off be the general thing but they could still assess your parking when parking at the Test Centre.

Don't think they be assessing you on reverse parallel parking (hope that's not on the test, I'll freak!), though when you pull up near the kerb you be parallel parking say 12-18 inches from the kerb/45 cm from the kerb I think.

When I did my exam a few months ago, other then pulling out of a parking spot and pulling into a parking spot at the end of the test, there was nothing else

There's no 'parking' per se on the test, what they mean is just when you are driving into a parking space at the end of the test. You aren't required to reverse in (you can drive straight in if you wish), and sometimes the tester will say just to pick any carspace!

Also, when asked to pull over at the side of the road during the test (you can be asked to do this, then you move off again, usually before you are asked to do a reverse manoeuvre) this counts as parking!

Or prior to reversing around corner, or turn in the road. But insure you are not obstructing a driveway as this may result in a mark against you.

The Only parking marks that you’re marked on is at the end of the driving test when you park the car. Reverse, parallel, or driving into a space are all acceptable.

Parking marks are fairly rare but do come up from time to time.

Also At the start of the test it doesn’t matter to the tester how your car is park, it could be taking up two spaces, parked on double yellows, or up on a verge the tester can’t mark it

All other pulling in to stop i.e. reverse/turnabout/hand signals /hill start are all marked as position stopping.

    hope this helps

.......and it's always a good idea to reverse into the parking bay prior to begining the test so that you can drive straight out when the test commences rather than begining the test with a reverse manoeuvre.

Particularly if you're sitting the test in Naas and park outside the Test Centre.

It's not pleasant having to reverse off a download slope onto a main road.
