Looking for a block of dry wood exactly 8x8x8 for an item for a woodturning competition. Anyone know where I would get something?

Anything once its dry, its for a turned wooden puzzle. Laminating a blank will lead people to think it was assembled rather than turned from one piece.

I think you are quite near Dunnes Workshop, i remember seeing some 8x8 Iroko Teak in their store some time back..They possibly have other woods that size in stock..
Otherwise, a sawmill is a good bet, not sure how dry it would be though.

I worked for them for 13 years. The last time I worked with Iroko there I broke out in a terrible rash and had to go into hospital.

I don't like using it myself.

Was laid off since last August. I do a little woodturning as a hobby but i find it difficult to source both dry and wet wood for turning as everyone seems to be keeping it for firewood.

I used to buy all my turnings there until i bought my own hydraulic copy lathe about 3 years ago.Got it for a good price.
There's a company in the UK, who specialise in woodturning blanks in more wood species than i even knew existed. http://www.john-boddy-timber.ltd.uk/

The things I'd like to turn are small items like bowls, lidded boxes and stuff like walking sticks and candlesticks. I'm still a newbie and don't like learning on wood i have to buy. I'd be a bit weary of ruining the piece and the fun would be just gone out of it then.

;) I think you will find it impossible to find 8"x8" timber with a reasonable moisture content. I know the turning blank suppliers in the UK say the moisture content is not guaranteed above 4" in their blanks.Turning high moisture wood invites splits and checks pretty quickly if brought indoors.
If you found some 4" timber you like I'd suggest you bring it indoors for a month and then glue the two bits together. As the blank would be from the same board I'd be confident nobody would spot the junction and it should be stable when turned.
