Have noticed a rattle noise the past week coming from the car when shes ticking over or lying idle. When you start accelerating the noise seems to go. Lifted the bonnet today and the noise seems to be coming from left of engine as your looking down at it. Anyone ever have this before or know what it might be?
    Cheers

    Could be anything really!

If it's a diesel it could be the flywheel. Check to see if the rattle goes when the clutch is pressed.

On that side of the engine, it could be a belt/pulley issue. Get it checked out asap anyway

No its a petrol so no flywheel.Would a problem with the water pump be causing it? theres no sign of a leak anyway.

Most likely it's your air conditioning pump, usually starts to rattle around the 100k mark, when your engine is idling and making the noise, turn on the air con, and see if the noise goes, if it is the air con, you have 3 options, 1 ignore it and drive on, 2 bypass the sitcom unit with a smaller belt, cost €50. 3 replace pump, cost in excess of €700.

What year Avensis is it .If its 2000-2002 VVTi it could be the Inlet Manifold. If it is you can sort it by putting a screw in at the top of the Manifold

It was the water pump. Got it replaced and a new fan belt £140 all in.
