Has anybody any ideas of how to get rid of a very painful lactic acid build up without doing more painful exercise?

More than likely not lactic acid and likely tightness.

What has caused the pain in the shins?

I did a tough 4 hour trek and did not do any stretching when I finished.

Its just DOMS, Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. It can happen after anything thats physically tough. It's not caused by lactic acid build up.
There is little you can due to speed recovery. Try talking a bath to relax, but ultimately the best thing is rest.

I have tight calves that easily lock up from a lot of running. I bought the stick for rolling them it and it helped out big time.

Did you get the pain to a significant level while you were exercising? Is it in the front of your shins?
If yes to both then it sounds like shin splints and plenty of rest is important. You are best off avoiding exercising past the point that you start to feel pain there.

Pain in shins =/= shin splints

    Biggest leap ever.

And even if it is shin splints it makes more sense to treat the issue causing other than mindlessly "rest" and hope for it to get better.

Shin splints is a general term to describe shin pain.
So yes pain in shins does = shin splints. That is the definition of the term

You misrepresented what I said also. Pushing through shin pain is a bad idea. It makes it worse, in the sense that next time you do the same thing you'll get it faster, not slower. It's a good idea not to do so.

Surprised you found a way to take exception to simple obvious advice like that really.

Never said they shouldn't address any possible causes that exist beyond overexertion. I'm not a phsyio and I know nothing about the OP beyond a couple of lines of text so I'm hardly going to start spouting in-depth or specific advice.

Your post is inappropriately aggressive to the point of being ****ing weird tbh.

it's a general term but not an complete catch-all. You're taking that out of context I think.
If my little brother kicks me in the shin, it'll probably cause some shin pain but calling that shin splints would be wrong, for example.

I'd associate it with connective tissue stress from long sessions or cronic abuse as opposed to trauma or DOMS. But I'm not 100% sure that's accurate either

Sorry, I must have turned off the "kiss everyone's a$$" function on my keyboard.

Sincerest apologies. Won't happen again :)

It's for TOTAL MUSCLE MANAGEMENT!!!!!. I think that's the package you're looking at. I got my stick for like around 50 bucks in physio needs in Ringsend.
