I need to renew my drivers license this week. Whats the story with this new license thats supposed to be coming in next year? Am I better off renewing now for one year or if I go with the ten year license will we all get the new licenses free or how will it work does anyone know? Id sooner renew for longer if I could but no point in paying for it if were all going to end up paying more in a year or whenever.

Can you renew for 1 year? didnt realise you could.

Either way, I highly doubt this new license will be available until at least end of 2013 judging by any previous project that has been undertaken by any government department in this country.

And no doubt it will come in over budget to and probably not fit for purpose.

You can renew for 1, 3 or 10 years apparently. Its only a fiver to renew for one year, so even if I ended up doing that twice it still works out a lot cheaper than the €25 I stand to lose if I got a 10 year license and the new licenses came out in 12-18 months time.

    I see, Cheers.

I suppose id just get a new paper one, perhaps 3 year. They can hardly not have it up an running by then... but they have history ;)

They have stated you can swap your paper licence for the new plastic one when it comes out but there will be a fee for doing so.

Cool I might just go with 1 or 3 years so and see what happens. I was reading an article from the end of last year that its not going to be a requirement to change, and that they expect the new license to cost €25-€30. Not sure if thats still the case.

BTW, you can only get a 3 or 10 year licence, the 1 year licence is for over 70's with certain medical conditions.

Ah fair enough; didnt read that part!

Its a bit odd you can't download the application form D401. Imagine having to actually physically go to a building to get a form. Just like the good old days

There's s sticky part on the form that you sign and they peel off and apply to your licence. Kinda hard to include a sticky label on a downloadable form :p

    That would explain that so.
