So the battery in my Almera is fooked so I bought a new one (battery) the other week, I was planning on changing it today so I went into a Nissan dealership to get the radio code as I didn't get a manual with the car.

I asked the lady on reception could she get it for me. She asks me for identification and proof of ownership, thats no problem and I gave them to her. She starts clicking away on her computer and tell me she has it but first she needs €50!

€50 for a 30 second search on a computer? What the hell?

    I politely declined.

What year is the Almera? I don't think the rdio is coded on my '05. I suppose that means "yes", you are being ripped off.

I emailed them first to see could they help me and they said no problem but make sure to bring identification and proof of ownership, it also said there maybe a small fee involved. I was thinking maybe €5 not bloody €50.

I had similar trouble and in the end they didn't give me the number. They said nothing about the €50, just hummed and hawed and eventually I just got a new radio.

Any good? on eBay. Same service as dealer just a bit slower I suppose as they insist on posting it to you.

    03.

What reg is on the car? Assuming it was origionally irish, look at the reg then ring the Nissan dealer for that county, if they sold it new it should be on their system and they'll give it to you for nothing.

i would make a holy disgrace of a place if they tried charging me 50 quid for a code.

If you keep 12v power to the car with jumpleads or a power pack then you will not lose the radio code. It can be a bit fiddly but worfh a try. Did it on a Tino a couple of months ago.

to the OP , yes that is a rip off.

I lost power on my Renault recently , phoned the dealer , they gave me the code instantly.

Mods ..... would this be a case for name and shame ?

have a look under the ashtray and in places similar, you might find the code recorded there.

    No.

Most garages have to access a system to get those codes and pay the same fee's. if another Nissan garage charged considerably less to do it i can see a reason for naming and shaming, but for now it's just pointless.

I think this case is a little different, he didn't need a code but they were going to charge him for one anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

This is not the dealers fault.

Nissan Ireland charge the dealer a fee for the code, which of course the dealer will pass onto the customer.

There are other manufacturers out there who do this, where as some dont charge anything.

Did you explain to the dealer why you required the code, or did you just ask for it? They should have known that the radio wasnt coded, so if you told them why they should have told you you didnt need it.

I told the girl on reception I needed it because I was changing the battery. I presume she didn't know I didn't need it.

Not being funny, but she probably didn't have a clue.

However the system should be set up in such a way that it tells whoever operates it that certain radios aren't coded.

Where was this dealer as a matter of interest? (not looking for a name)
