No Motor Tax and petrol cheaper than Ireland?

    Wondering how to come to terms with taxation in France, who abolished the "Vignette" Motor Tax and collect the revenue via the motor fuel consumed by the motorist.
    Fair enough, one says, but I am paying less than I would pay in Ireland for a litre of 95 octane petrol.
    All the advertising here (France) extols the low emissions of the new cars on sale, but there is no penalty for having an elderly 3 .5 litre Jeep except that it may be thirsty and cost more to run?

    Where have I gone wrong in thinking that our Irish Government is being silly?
    They could disband the motor taxation departments, and just make fuel outlets collect all the tax with a small amount on the fuel price?

    Is this the way to begin to run a more cost efficient motor taxation system?

    what do folk think?

    I saw an item on Sky News the other day where people in Paris were complaining that they were paying €2.02 per litre in Paris. Cheaper in the suburbs, apparently.

    If you abolish road tax and increase price of petrol, everyone has to pay, so voters unhappy. If you keep road tax, many people don't pay and get away with it, so they happy!
