I have a lovely calf, about 3 weeks old, she is starting to lose alot of hair. I did her for lice about a week ago when i first noticed her losing it. But couldnt find any lice on her. Bucket fed and in a house with 3 other calves that have not been affected. Also her skin seemed to go kind of orange with a kind of orange flakyness before she started losing the hair. Was eating and drinking fine up to today but noticed her lyin down alot more today. But drank fine this morning. Anyone any ideas or seen this before?

It could be photosensetivity or at least I think thats the name of it. Greysides should be able to shed some light on it for you.

I have noticed that happening more and more with my suckler calves over the past four or five years.
I had 6 or 7 of them last year, with a lot of hair loss from 6 weeks old to maybe three months. The look terrible with it, but all recover the hair later in the summer, and you wouldn't know they ever had a problem.

If photosensivity then better to put her in a dark shed. Do they access to any hay? If so she might have ate some plant in it.

It could be the feed they are getting or else a lack in vitamins.

    Maybe a Vitamin A deficiency?

Try some vitamin injections or tonics.

Bought in the hay, but no other calf thats eating it has had any problems. I dont see any weeds in it anyway. Seems quite grassy. She was in good form yesterday evening and this morning anyway. Doesnt seem to be losing any more hair than she has already in the last few days.
