External hard drive broken?

I bought an external harddrive which I use to store photos. I rarely use it and keep it safe away in a camera box.

When I turned it on the other day to load up more photos i couldn't access it on the PC. When I switch it on the red light flicks for a second but then stops which doesn't look too good. Saying that the machine itself is running as I can hear the usual PC humming sound.

Any ideas and what can I do?

It wasn't dropped and is rarely used so I am struggling to see what the problem is?

What brand is it? My friend had a similar problem with a Western digital and had to send it off to them to get his info off it. is the light continuously flashing or just for a few seconds?

Does it have it's own power supply, independent of the USB cable ?
Usually larger hard disks over say 250gb need their own power supply.

Did you try another USB cable?

It has its own lead to plug into the mains cos it is over 1gig I think.

Re brand, I have no idea to be honest... OPPS!!!
