    Service the car?

    Thanks folks...quick or what! ;)

The car has been serviced twice in the last year.

The dealership that I bought if from were'nt Renault specialists and they were aware that the service light wouldnt go out. I bougth it anyway as I wasnt aware it was an NCT fail criteria.

Had NCT last week, and service the week prior to that, in my usual garage,

The NCT tester was specific about in not passing with that light on (and shocks which I knew were dodgy), as its a warning sign.

Having it serviced again on Thursday, but am pretty sure that the light wil not go out without some electrics being re-set...

    thanks

Can you drop into a Renault dealer and ask them to reset it ?

Or if see if someone you know has an OBD (on-board diagnostic) car computer/scan tool to reset that warning for you?

Why would service it again thursday if it was only done two weeks ago? Changing the oil isnt going to turn the light off. Get a main dealer to reset it.

The service was just a lights and emissions, letting the NCT pick up on other areas.

I 'd say you are right about main dealer,..the one near me closed due to recession..:(..its an on-board computer issue I'd say.

Am also picking up that this is a common problem with Renaults (?)

If it's the service in dicator then it's not a "problem". It's supposed to come up when a service is due and be reset afterwards. There will be a sequence of button presses to turn it off. Cant remember off hand what it is on a Megane I.

If it's a fault it will usually be accompanied by anither light.

I suppose people assume that when the car is serviced the light goes off automaticilly. As mentioned above, it doesn't. In fact it wont go off if you give it three services in the space of a week or any amount of services.
The light needs to be reset either by a combination of dash botton presses or more likely, by connecting some diagnostics/management equipment to the car.
Sometime the main dealer is all that can do this but this is less likely nowadays.

The "SERV" light on a Megane isn't a service indicator light. It is a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)

It has no direct bearing on the NCT but you should get it checked out all the same. Any garage with decent diagnostic gear should be able to scan and diagnose it for you.

    try this mate should work

To reset the service light. First press the button on the control stalk until the service due message appears. Then you must press and hold the same button until the message stars to flash. Continue to hold the button until it resets and you get a new message xxxxx miles to next service.
