No money to leave

I know there's prob not much that I can do, but...

I'm only one payment way from having a black mark on my credit rating so I have to continue making the minimum monthly payment on my credit card.

Aside from this every penny I have is going on food, living, etc. and I find that I can't get enough money together to leave the country. As I don't have a job I don't think I'd get a loan- I am also paying off a personal loan from my bank so there again there's no room. My credit card is at its limit anyway, so again, I've nowhere to turn.

What do I do here? I just can't seem to get a job here even to get enough funds together to get out of here!

What are your skills and qualifications? Different towns have vacancies in different industries

talk to your bank and CC lender, they may be able to suspend/lower payments while you're in this position - but i'll guarrantee that they'll be more ameanable before you've missed a payment that after, so talk to them now.

    now, the controversial bit.

how valuable is a good credit score to you right now, and for the next few years?

do you see yourself being in a position to seriously apply for a mortgage, or car loan with any chance of actually getting one?

would a combination of a 'payment holiday', a job accross the Irish sea, and the casual mentioning to your lenders of the difference between UK and Irish bankruptsy law (though not an easy option by any means) help you to solve your problem?

Sadly my qualifications are in an area that is completely defunct now with the recession. I have been told many times that I'm overqualified for the unskilled jobs that I've been applying to. Even jobs like in hotels and factories- I can't get anything even there. I've been trying really hard and it's just no use... I literally can't see how I am going to get anything.

Thanks all. I take the point regards my credit rating but I have never had a black mark against me so I'm reluctant to do that. Maybe I will have to. I'm in arrears but it's within the allowed 6 months. If I continue to make the monthly payment there's no problem but if I miss one more then it's a black mark and more even agro than I have now. I'll ask about getting a payment holiday on my other loan- not sure thought that I'd get more than one month's break from that, and I'd need at least 3 months of a break to have enough money to get to London even.

It's a desperate situation. I do have one person I can possibly ask but they already helped me out of a tight spot last year and I hate asking again. I've let myself down bigtime here.

if that means construction or renewables/energy tech, then Germany and Norway are booming - like, really, importing labour, not fussed about language skills, boombing.

if you are Irish, which i assume you are, you have the legal right to book a flight this afternoo to go and work there. there are options.

I'm female and my qualifications are in a job area related to construction- one of the services that spun off from it. I just don't even have the money for a flight to london never mind abroad. I'm just going to hit the ground again this week. I got an email back from a recruiter in a hotel here after I sent an enquiry about possible jobs. They said they were recruiting and to send in my cv or call in. I sent the cv straight away as they are based a good bit away from me, and it was last friday of the bank holiday weekend, and I said I'd be available anytime to meet with them.
They never got back to me. I'm also 31, so maybe that's a factor. They might prefer to get students?
I just desperately need to get a job here so that I can get enough funds together to go back to college in sept to retrain, or even enough so that I can work the summer abroad.
Back to applying like mad. Printing off cvs tomorrow so that I can call in to some of the hotels in person.

Have you looked into the Back To Education Allowance?

IIRC, if you're out of work 12 months by September you could be entitled to keep your dole whilst re-training?

If you think ageism could be playing against you in the job market, leave your date of birth off your CV. ;)

I considered that Sleepy but my degree is on it so they can easily tell my age from that... is it advisable to leave the years off for your qualifications? I'd be worried it would seem off if I did that as normally you give the year you graduate?

i also wouldn't have expected 31 to be an issue, but I'm starting to wonder. I never had a problem getting a job when I was 19/20 and in my early 20s, and jobs weren't madly plentiful then, it was only about 2002 when it took off like mad.

Have applied for more jobs today- everything tailored as usual, but i'm changing tack and just going to apply to entry level jobs in my new career area. If no joy there I'm going to apply for a jobbridge. Nothing else to be done!

Thanks for all the advice guys, appreciate it.

I know a female who had construction related qualifications. she got a job in Oz where the company paid for her flight over and pay for her accommotion while she's there, as well as getting a really good salary. look into companies abroad that provide those sorts of perks.

I was 30/31 when I landed the skilled job I was after FOR YEARS.
Nothing magical or lucky about it, put head down, worked for free, worked in any job I could. Now people look at me and go oh you have it easy, nice permanent job. If they only knew my last job was a week to week contract and I worked and studied every single minute of the day and night and just did not give up. I also hasten to add, at the height of the boom, when everyone was rolling in it, I could not get a job for love nor money. Not even a job sweeping the floor, for about a year. I just kept applying.

Anyhow, my point is I didnt give up. And neither should you. If you are looking to apply for high skilled jobs, put it all in there and the kitchen sink. If you are looking for lesser skilled jobs, you need to curtail your CV-thats a fact.

Youll start somewhere and you will get a job and work your way up if you have determination to get there. It aint going to fall into your lap, so keep at it.

Well done dellas, that's fab! I am literally going at it day and night, very disappointed the hotel never got back to me, but that's the way. I really want to get something by Friday though, I'm applying to the jobbridges tomorrow so I'll have all the wheels spinning.
Have learned some very hard lessons that I suspect wouldn't have come up had I gotten my career choice right the first time but you can't expect to make the right decisions all the time.

Well, Ill tell you, if you are at it day and night, it will happen for you. It will. And it sounds like you deserve it too.

It is never too late to try or change something. And at 31, you are still a spring chicken (look-65/66 is normal retirement age-how long is that?). Keep plugging away and it will happen. For some people, alot of things go their way, including jobs, relationships, money etc. For some people, they graft away. And Ill tell you, Ive alot more respect for people like this. And usually you'll have a better attitude towards things in the long run.
