As long as he's back for their game about City, then I don't really care otherwise to be honest.

His plight has been rather amusing.

    What's with the rolleyes?

If you excuse the hyperbole in the title it's a legitimate question to ask.

I for one hope he's in great form going to city on wednesday :)

The rolleyes were because he's had one decent game against a championship side, which in absolutely no way tells us whether or not he's "back"

Exactly, the thread asked was he back, doesn't say he is.

When he bangs in 20+ over the course of a season you can consider him back then.

Also, why would a Manchester United fan want to see one of their rivals players doing well?

    Pointless thread is pointless.

the op has posted a question for intelligent debate. he's only mistake is forgetting there are too many people on boards incapable of such a thing. I could give you examples to start you off if you like.

now that torres has actually scored, do you think that will have released his daemons etc etc or is this now the start of a goal scoring run, etc etc.
that's how you debate, not a one word negative.

and its a completely legitimate question given the media attention, the history surrounding the player and the fee paid and his lack of goals

grow a brain or don't bother sharing your less than inciteful negative crap

LOL, I can't see images on my smart phone, so its lost on me. plus I take a dim view of just posting an image, its the lazy man's way alright - unoriginal and requires very little effort. too much trouble to string WORDS together to form an argument

A single game in which he performed well isn't the grounds to judge. Has he performed well in his last few games? We'll hopefully see how will he fare against tougher premiership and european teams over the coming weeks and then we'll get a clearer picture of where he stands. As an lfc supporter I wish him no ill-will and would like him to get back to his best (just not against us) but it's just not possible to make a definitive judgement based on just today's game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,165 ✭✭✭MANUTD99

As at United fan, I am glad he scored twice today as they are playing City in the next game. 2 goals will give anyone confidence and he even did a post match interview.

Long term I couldn't give a toss about him but would love if he smashed another goal in next week

If he wants to encourage intelligent debate then he should probably focus his attention on adding intelligible posts about the topic itself rather than spending his time getting in sly digs against other posters.

But that's neither here nor there, as I don't think SgtPepper gives a toss about intelligent debate, he just saw a post he didn't like in relation to a chelsea player and decided to go on a little tirade, as that's the kind of bitter poster he tends to be imo, as highlighted earlier today by saying Wolves should have been fined.

Furthermore, shadowcomplex, I happen to think most of your threads are pointless, as you tend to open with a one line post and then disappear, never to contribute again.

But to get back to the question at hand....

No, it's only been one game. (OMG that was a hard question, if this thread stays open long enough maybe I'll come back later and post the thesis which helped me come to such a remarkable conclusion, and then perhaps we can all sit around drinking brandy and smoking cigars?)

First soccer forum post (better make it good) !

I was delighted for Torres today, seems a real honest decent guy compared to a few other premier league footballers who it's a lot easier to enjoy a bad run of form

Scoring today could have gotten the monkey off his back

He was fantastic around the field today too

First reaction on seeing the goals is that the goalie has taken a bung.

For the first goal he had a good chance of saving it with his right hand but inexplicable decided to try and reach it with his left, it also appears that he kind of collapses his right leg so as not to reach to his full extent.

For the second goal the goals also seems to take a second step to the right after Torres has connected with his head.

Anyone feel the same. If it comes out in the press you heard it here first...:pac:

How often do you see a striker go through a dry spell, bang in a couple of goals (even against a poor team), and then he carries on like Messi.

He aint back, but I wouldnt be a bit surprised if he starts banging them in, which as a gooner, makes me worry a little. Change of manager may have done hm good too (how often do you see that too?).

I thought he looked fairly sharp in the CL during the week and was not surprised that he scored today. I think no matter how the rest of the season goes, his move was a bad one. He is a shadow of the player he was. Even though his performances were sliding before he left anfield he is now at a new low level. I hope he gets another few goals as the season goes on as he really looks seriously píssed off for the last few weeks/months.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,238 ✭✭✭✭Diabhal Beag

His plight was initially funny. He went from a player who was excellent for Liverpool early on, to player who struggled for goals while they were in the Europa League, to Judas, to poor start, to awful run of form, to player who makes Andy Carroll look clinical. Then it started getting painful to see casual fans over-rated to a world-class player in the ilk of 2002 Ronaldo in his latter Liverpool days when he really wasn't call him a poor player. That was the breaking point. For me as a neutral fan of football my season so far has been cheering on Torres to score. It's been painful at times for me so imagine how bad he's felt. His confidence went to nothing from the man who won Spain Euro 2008. You could see the start of his dip at the 2010 World Cup and it never stopped. He seems nervous shooting but his play in general hasn't been as disastrous as his goal ratio would seem.

I genuinely want to see him succeed at Chelsea and again at international level because from his days as captain of Atletico Madrid anybody could see he had class and had massive potential. To see him drop any further from the heights he achieved while still being young would be akin to seeing Vicente playing for Brighton x100.

You mean he introduces a topic and just lets it run?

He doesn't just post to tell us his own opinion or ram his own agenda through?

Who needs someone like that around here. Lifetime ban IMO.

It's all about confidence for a striker. He's got the monkey off his back now, with a small bit more confidence and a goal or two more, theres no reason why he might start banging a few in. Don't think AVB agreed with him and perhaps with RDM as manager we might start to see glimpses of the old torres.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25,953 ✭✭✭✭kryogen

Regarding the thread, there is actually a place called the Chelsea superthread or something or other used to discuss Chelsea matters, why a new thread was made I can not understand?

But to answer, since Im here, who knows? he scored twice in a cup match against a team in a lower division. Proves or disproves nothing.

He "got the monkey off his back" a couple of times before, and AVB has not been the only manager he has played under at Chelsea.

I hope he gets back to his best. Was left out of the Spanish squad recently for the first time in five years I read. Hopefully he can finish the season well for Chelsea and get back in del Bosque's plans for the Euros. He seems like a very no-nonsense manager.

Oh my god 2 goals against Leicester City and people think hes back!:rolleyes:
First goal he looked like he wanted to get rid of the ball asap and kinda scuffed it, 2nd goal the keeper should of saved it. He had a great chance for a hatrick but instead layed it off for meireles for the last goal. If he was actually a bit greedy and had a shot inside the box instead of laying it off Id say hmm maybe hes confident again. To be a good striker u gotta be greedy.

Hes still afraid of his bollox of the goal. Hes at the club over a year he shouldnt be still like this. Hes finished imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 264 ✭✭Leejo

Because im a fan of football and great players and as long as he doesnt do well against us I dont mind

Don't get that mentality. Are you a fan of football? Or a fan of Manchester United?

Put it this way, Torres comes back into form, scores 30+ goals a season for one of your biggest rivals and fires Chelsea to the league. Are you delighted he's doing well for himself 'cos he's a great player n'all that, or are you annoyed/angry because it's because of him that your team hasn't won the league.

Really don't see how anyone can want players of one of their biggest rivals to excel considering how it affects them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 952 ✭✭✭shangri la

Yes, he is most definately back on the horse. I seen a glint in his eye that showed the determination is there. Take your points and the goals will follow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,919 ✭✭✭Schism

Today was a major step in the right direction for him. I wouldn't say he's back though, it's going to take a lot for him to regain his confidence. Wait until he gets a sustained run of goals (it will happen) and a few winners under his belt and he'll be back to his best.

And as a United fan I'm hoping he's got a few more in him midweek!

Liverpool supporter here, was delighted to see him score twice today, hopefully he can put away a few more before the season ends. Next season will tell a lot, i imagine chelsea will spend big on 1 or 2 forwards so itll be interesting to see what he does. Id say hell end up in spain again in a few years though.
But is the prolific goal scorer torres back? Not yet, but a big step in the right direction

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,334 ✭✭✭HalloweenJack

Even before he scored, I thought he was playing well. He seemed really up for it, like he knew that he wouldn't have a better chance of scoring.

Yeah, it's against Leicester City but they're still goals and he still scored them. People would be giving a hard time if he hadn't scored against them. It probably would've been worse for him, too.

I hope he gets back to the way he was when he left Liverpool. He now knows that he can still score and that should be enough to bring some more confidence into his game. He might return to the Torres of old, he might not but he's got those goals so that's a big monkey off his back. Maybe, with all the attention off him now, he'll be able to relax more. Who knows?

Personally, I'm delighted for him and, whether he scores in the next game or not, just happy that he finally put something away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,672 ✭✭✭elefant

Might be too late for him for this year. All things being fair, he shouldn't make the Spain squad for the Euros.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,397 ✭✭✭Paparazzo

He's had a good few games where he looked good, but didn't get that all important goal. Hopefully the pressure is off him now and it gives him some confidence.
However, I think he'll need a few more goals against premiership opposition to regain it fully

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭Phoenix Park

Chelsea don't play a system to his strengths. If you want to get the best from Torres, you build the entire attack around him. This will work, provided he keep his pace, if that pace is gone then its not going to work consistently no matter where in the side plays. There is little point in playing Torres with the style Chelsea play. A lot of the time i see him now he's far too wide. They should go back over footage of his first two years in English football if they want to get the best out of him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

Two goals against Leicester won't win over his critics. I'm not convinced he's anywhere near back to his best. However if he starts banging them in against Premier League teams and in the Champions league I'll eat my words.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 11,382 Mod ✭✭✭✭lordgoat

Sgt and shadow dominating a thread - wow. The mind at times really boggles.

    and on topic.

Is he back? I'll tell you after a few more games, i'm expecting him to be dropped at city. Drog > Tor. So if that happens and being back euqates to being back on the bench, then yep.
