Anyone ever hear of a Gemmologist?

Looked but can't figure out what section to put this in, according to wiki Gemmology is "considered a geoscience and a branch of mineralogy" so I guess the geo section that best place. Now until yesterday I'd never even heard the term, so has anyone else ever heard of a Gemmologist or is anyone a Gemmologist or ever had dealings with one? Trying to figure out if it could be an ok/good career choice or not? Some Gemmologist education/training courses are pretty expensive but others are more reasonably priced. There are no courses in Ireland though. Thanks.

Yeah, guess it's basically a very specialised subsect of Mineralogy in a way.

Do tell more! Did she like it? Is she working as one today? Does she work in Ireland? Was it easy for her to get work? Was her course expensive? Did she have a background in earth sciences etc?.....if ya know like, lol.

There is, or at least there was a Gemmology Diploma course ran in NUIG.

I personally don't know a thing about it, however I am an Earth and Ocean Science undergrad and can tell you that the listed course co-ordinator Prof Martin Feely is a super sound guy and would be well worth contacting in relation to your queries.

Aside from the specific field of Gemmology, Geology and Earth sciences in general are a great area of study to get into. Employment in these areas should be prosperous in the coming years, certainly abroad if not here in Ireland.

There isn't huge call for gemmologists in Ireland really. It does sound interesting, I looked into Martin Feely's course a few years ago, but decided not to go for it. You wouldn't need a geology background to do it.
