It depends what you want from it. Most of the very cheap ones will only deal with OBD/EOBD engine codes. Whilst these are very important, they don't cover the likes of air bags and abs etc. But I suppose you get what you pay for.

Got a OBII reader a few years ago from argos, which doesn't just give a code to lookup, but actually diagnostic fault result, ie( 02-sensor1 fault low voltage) the one I got is exellent for GM-opel & ford, but some cars still have their own systems like VW.

My one can monitor live sensor readings. There is also data loggers that can record a cars performance (pick the sensors to monitor) and then view the data on a PC.

If your getting one, go for the newer types that will also talk to external systems like airbags not just the ECU.

Just make sure it will talk with your car before buying, others will have better info than myself, but defo these are real handy devices.

I have an Ultra Gauge II in my car, connected to the OBDII port. Gives real-time information on fuel economy as well as alarms set at various levels (annoying, I have them all off).
I think it's brilliant myself, and as my little car complains about P0420 emissions about once a fortnight, and brings on the Check Engine Light about once a month. Couple of clicks makes the light go away..

I also have, somewhere in the house, a CarChipPro which records data but doesn't show live info, less useful but different data.
