Pre season players

We're in the last quarter of the season. Which got me thinking which players did you fancy before the season started and which ones lived up to that? I indulged in both Moses and N'Zogbia at the start of the season due to pre season talk but they didn't live up to much (despite Moses doing very well recently!). I think my only solid choice since the start of the season was Silva who should stick in my team til the end. On the other side of the coin are players who people weren't expecting to do well. Mostly from the promoted teams. But which players from these teams did you invest in from the start. I'm going to admit that I didn't have too many players from Norwich, Swansea and QPR at the start of the season but now have the full trio compliment from Swansea.

So who were you pre-season worst buys and who were you best?

Had Stewart Downing at the start of the season, my secret shame

Moses was my big one too. Watched him pre-season and he was banging in goals and all-round looked like the best bargain of the lot. Didn't quite work out like that.

N'Zogbia too, but that was more based on last season's performance.

Then I guess Shay Given has to go in there too. Started with him, and he never really worked out.

Not quite pre-season, but after watching the first Chelsea game, Torres actually looked pretty good. Had him for two weeks after that, which was no doubt my worst investment.

On a smaller scale, I predicted big things from QPR's Buzsaky, who I still believe to be a quality player, but I got stung big-time with QPR deciding to bring in a bunch of midfielders before the season began.

My only real pre-season positive was bookmarking Demba Ba right from the start. I'd seen his goalscoring record at previous clubs, and expected big things from him. Of course, that never worked out at the start because of Ramadan, meaning he wasn't fit enough to play.

Like everyone else I jumped on the Adel Taraabt bandwagon. The wheels quickly came of that one.

Thankfully I didn't bother with him.

I did have Moses and N'Zogbia though.

Good call on Ba. I like most others just jumped on that bandwagon

Also wondering did anyone have these players in their starting 11 back in August:

    1. Vorm
    2. Ryan Taylor
    3. Bale?

I predicted Sess would and kept hold of him for weeks at the start only for him to produce nothing. Then I dropped him and he scored one week and an assist a week later so I brought him back in. That was the end of his good run!

He did eventually come good though. Other than that, I expected Kompany to be one of the best defensive buys of the season at 6.0 but that was fairly obvious. Same with Enrique.

As per people above, Taraabt, Moses and Given were my failures.

Had Taraabt for quite a while at the start presuming he would finally come good with his form from the season before, also had Torres who I thought would come good under AVB which was probably my biggest mistake as at the time everyone else had Rooney who was banging in goals.

In terms of bargains, the biggest one would have to be Vorm, have had him since after Swanseas first game of the season against city where I thought he was impressive despite losing 3-0, initially got him as a sub keeper but he's started most games.

Other bargains would be getting in big Ade before his first game with spurs and having his price sky rocket after that and Sigurdsson, got him in before he made his first appearance for swansea after I looked up his stats with Reading and Hoffenheim and he has been incredible since..

Holt and Surman for Norwich and Formica for Blackburn...none really panned out!

    Downing.NZogbia & Rodallega:eek: How I got a decent score with those in the team I don't know.

They all suffered from 'Charlie Adam Syndrome'. Past FF glories count for nothing in this game.

Gary Cahill is another, every one had him for ages but he did nothing at all...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭keano_afc

My opening weekend team had Cahill, N'Zogbia, Rodallega and Torres. With Nando as captain. I was bottom of my main league, only Cahill got into double figures. Oh yeah, I also had Gervinho, who was sent off thanks to Barton.

My opening day strikeforce was Bent, Carroll and Drogba! Silva's the only guy to last from the first week although I've had Vorm since GW2. Success stories have been getting Dempsey, Siggy and RVP just before they exploded onto the scene.

Annoying moment of the season will be keeping Moses for waaay too long and him finally getting an assist the week I got rid of him :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Link here to two articles on newly promoted Championship players that I posted pre-season. Very few predictions proved correct. Shane Long about the only stand-out.

Here's my team for gameweek 1

    Al-Habsi (2)
    Fabio(3)---Terry(8)---Kompany(6)
    Moses (2)--Nani(2)---Silva(c)(18)---Downing(2)---Taarabt(2)
    Drogba(1)----Radallega(1)

    Bench: Given----Jose-Enrique---Holt----Brown

had rvp, silva and rooney at the start. n'zog, moses and rodallega failed.

Silva only player I've had form the very start, all the way through (though had Vorm from week 2). Had Rooney at the start but dropped him when his form dipped, then brought him back in last week.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Yep I was on the Taarabt bandwagon, held on to him much longer than I should have too.

    oup991.jpg

Had some good buys though, Sinclair, Kompany, Simpson and Huth (who did well for the first 4 games, then went to sh*t).

Davies has had his worst season yet.

    Team for GW1:

    Al Habsi (2)
    Hughes (6) - Bosingwa (6) - Lescott (6)
    Sessegnon (2) - Nani (2) - Silva (18,C) - Taarabt (2) - Moses (2)
    Carroll (2,V) - Van Persie (2)

    Bench: Given (7) - Holt (2) - Simpson (6) - Wilkinson (0)

    --

Only 2 players have never moved from my team: Silva & Simpson.
I ditched VP with the GW2 WC for Rooney. And got him back 3 weeks too late.

Lescott was a mistake, I thought I was being clever as anyone seemed to go for Kompany and I remembered Lescott being more of a goal threat (also I shouldn't have watched the Community Shield where Kompany gave the win to Man U with an incredible mistake, it clouded my mind about him).

Taarabt & Moses were bandwagon fail.

Carroll was an epic fail. I thought he had potential for scoring with Adam and Downing behind him and Jose Enrique's crosses. He didn't stay long in my team but enough to let Rooney and Aguero do the damage points wise...

Hughes stopped playing quickly. I still don't know why.
Given never did it for me.

And I had Sess' & Nani too early, lost patience and sold them when they started to perform, then got Nani back when he stopped performing. This last mistake ruined my season. I lost around 80 pts over 3-4 weeks as a result.

My only good pick was Bosingwa. I also cashed in very well from him.

    --

So, not a great start at all. My first season starting from GW1. Hopefully next will be better...

Ah, how could I forget Vidic?!? I broke my own rule with him by having such an expensive defender. Would have stuck with him too if it wasn't for injury. Huge loss to both United and FF players this season.

This was a pretty poor choice for my first week. It really ****ed me over. I was 1.2 million overall.

I brought Torres in in the second week for some reason. Thank god I dropped him and got Rooney in instead for the third week. Then I made him captain and also had Young. 98 points. I rose a million places and my season was back on track.

    Team from GW1

    Kenny

    Hughes, Cole, Kompany

    Sess, Moses, Jarvis, Silva

    Bent, Rooney, Zamora

    Subs: Given, Walters, Brown, Tate.

Got 64 points that week. Jarvis was a boss at the start of the season. Was convinced Sess and Moses would come good. They did of course, just not while in my team.

Inexplicably got rid of Silva in GW2. I think I did it because Toure was bombing forward all day against Swansea and I thought he was the better option as a result. Poor decision. I don't even want to think about the Hilario experiment of GW2 and 3. And of course Torres (C).

Kompany is the only player I've had all season long.

Did the exact same! 12 weeks of beautiful fixtures, mazy dribbles, crossbars, countless efforts and wasteful Wigan for a solitary clean sheet point. Then as soon as Wigan's fixtures get hard, he starts racking up the points. Infuriating.
