So there is this guy across the road that washes his car maybe once or more in a week its a BMW. Is it bad for the paint work doing this. He even goes out in the lashing rain washing it

Not really no, modern paint would be fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,626 ✭✭✭✭vectra

If I was not feeling in a lazy mood I would be washing mine today as I went to Cork yesterday in the Rain with it. That would be my 4th time washing it this week.
A Lot depends on how you wash it. If he ( your neighbour ) was using a bucket and brush/sponge then he will seriously deteriorate the paint condition.

It's a brush on black paint

Depends on what technique he uses. He could be destroying it or doing no harm.

No matter how you wash a black car, you are going to cause swirl marks so yes washing it that much will ruin the paint work, but he will not be able to see it till the sun comes out in summer.

Really? I've never noticed a difference and I've been doing it that way for years

EDIT: Should add that I'm using a sponge and it gets a wax every so often.

    Not entirely correct
    My last car was Black
It was often washed on a daily basis.

Still looked good after more than 2 years.

Its actually clean enough for its age.

it was owned by an aul fella before me and I highly doubt it was ever cleaned. There was mould growing on the dash when I got it and the seats were manky. Its a lot better now

Pardon my ignorance, but what is wrong with a sponge wash? What's the best way?

A sponge will pick up pieces of dirt etc and rub them into the paintwork. 2 bucket method is probably the best with a grit guard and lambswool wash mitt.

Check out a great post on detailingworld.co.uk here.

Black is a bitch to keep. I got paint correction done on the car and i had swirls again after the first time i washed it by hand and i use the two bucket method with the right tools. Argh!

Yeah its annoying but once you can accept its going to happen then can enjoy the car more i think! My old car was silver and never showed anything after years of auto car washes from previous owners. Black cars look best imo though so thats why I keep getting them :) I do a proper machine polish once every year or two which brings it back to showroom finish

So did I, however I would wash it three times every two weeks, and never in the rain. When its raining its time to do the interior.

Crilly...blacks not a colour its a full time job. ;)

Mine either (and it's black)! It has a few marks in it at this stage that are annoying me. I see them when it's clean. I really should get them done... Even so at best though I'd be doing it once a month.

Even if I had a brace of servants I wouldn't make them clean the car once a day - or a week!

Wash mine every Friday evening, have it rinsed, washed, dried and tyres dressed in 30mins flat.

How do you start from a completely muddy surface? The lower ends of my doors can sometimes have about 3mm of mud on them after a few days! I measured it one day because when i opened the passenger door, the mud over the wing/door join cracked off and i could measure it the thickness!:pac:
During wet weather i could literally wash my car every day to keep it clean.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Only do about 100 miles a week on clean roads. Car never has mud on it.

I drove 8 miles this afternoon and the bottom of the car was manky again

Great thread. I would have thought I was doing right by my car by giving it a sponge wash.

I now own a black car and the previous owner must have washed it several times with a brillo pad lol. Where can I get a paint correction? Can you get it as part if a valet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,462 ✭✭✭TheBazman

Jees if only some of you could shrink your cars and put them on the mantelpiece - you could shine them and look at them all day ;)
Seriously though -it's nice to have a shining clean car but, they are made to be used. It's just wrong to be spending almost as much time cleaning them as driving them......

    Yes... and no.

The attitude of the Irish towards cars is a complete joke most of the time. I'd say 1 in 10 wash it by themselves to begin with rather than carwash if that at all

I would always prefer an "over" cared for car than under, no?

Rarely wash my car, rarely get it washed, rarely wax or polish it, it's a bit of a shed tbh but I'm just not overly into keeping it clean :)

I haven't washed mine since October. Bought new cloths and everything for it 5 weeks ago and still haven't got a minute for it. Was all ready to wash it today until it made a shower, put me right off! Its dark blue so it literally gets dirty when the car starts. :(

Absolutely I would prefer an over-cared for car, and I'm only commenting that the level of care, specifically in relation to washing could be classified as OCD -esque for some people. And I dont think that if you "only" wash your car a couple of times a month that it should be classified as under-cared for.

Also I agree that if you want to keep the paint in decent nick you should stay away from the auto brush washes. I wash my car by hand but only once or twice a month or if it really needs it. Saying that it is done in probably 20mins or so and would probably be 90% as clean as if I spent 2 hrs on it.

Anyway each to their own. Covering 500miles a week or so means it's impractical for me to have a spotless car all of the time

It's impossible to keep clean! Once the roads are wet the bottom of the car is dirty by the time it pulls up, regardless of how short the distance is.
