I'm about to start into a workout programme and wouldn't mind keeping track of my bodyfat percentage. I've used the hand held digital type gadget in the last gym I was a member of but I've been told that they wouldn't be too reliable.

I'm thinking about buying a calipers but I'm wondering do you really need to know what your doing to get a proper reading, and are they expensive to buy.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

This is a really good question. I think there might be a bit of training involved to use them properly.

My trainer measures my body fat using calipers and I have a tanita body fat monitor at home which measures body fat by bioelectrical impedance analysis. The results are massively different - approx six percentage points!

Does anyone know which method tends to be more reliable?
