DOMS (and other injuries) after a game of football, in agony...

    Hey guys,

I played a 5 v 5 game of football Wednesday evening and it was very physical. I haven't played for nearly a decade. I was extremely tired and puffing & wheezing within 15 mins of playing and I had another 45 mins to go.

Anyways, when I was playing I could feel my left calf muscle being "pulled" when I went to take a shot on goal but it went away after about 30 seconds. Later on though, I took another shot on goal and my right calf muscle was "pulled" this time and couldn't get up off the ground. I had to wait 5 mins before I could get back on the pitch and walk on it.

I'm guessing I could stretch a bit more to avoid these injuries in the future? Any ideas which stretches? I tried doing some before playing but they don't seem to have worked.

About DOMS... my body is still aching and I can barely move and seems to be quite severe. Is there anything I can do or eat to help the healing process?

I'm trying to get fit again for weekly games of football so is there any drills anyone can offer me?

I hope this is in the appropriate section, thanks.

Rule no.1 of this thread: No medical advice. Sorry OP, no one can give you any advice on injury treatment. If that starts happening, I'm going to have to lock the thread.

I'll leave it open so people can advise you on how to deal with DOMS and give you pre match warm up and stretching routines.

Cool, that's what I'm hoping for so I can prepare myself so that this doesn't happen again... or be as painful again.

I'm sure it's becaus of a bad pre-match warmup. I stretched my legs by holding my knees to my chest, grabbing each foot from behind, leaning to my side with one knee and stretching out the other and then a short warm-up jog around the pitch.

I'm sure there are different types of warm-ups for certain sports so I'm really looking for this. It's hard to find with Google searches as Football search queries usually end up with American Football based answers and "Soccer" searches usually doesn't come up with much.

I'm not looking for medical help. :)

How could you let yourself become so unfit?

For football your best bet is simply jogging. You dont really need to do any specific drills. Maybe a combination of sprinting to joking to sprinting again to really shock your system.

I know, I'm devastated at how unfit I am. I used to be very active but I took to the musical side of life, grew my hair and didn't practice any sports. Time to get back to it now though :).

What is sprinting to joking? My system really needs to be shocked.

Edit: I assume you mean jogging? I'm going to do that.

you'll be fine by next week and it'll get a lot easier from now on, after 2-3 months break from footy I can barely walk for days after that first game back. cant imagine a decade :) its normal though dont worry!
