2002 RAV4 Clutch/Gearbox/Flywheel Question

    HI,

I Recently took a '02 RAV4 to Toyota dealer for check as I just bought it.

Mechanic told me clutch and gearbox had been recently replaced but were not genuine parts. He also said that he suspected a standard flywheel had been fitted instead of a floating flywheel and this was causing a vibration in the gear stick in 5th.

He recommended I leave car in to have new clutch/gearbox and flywheel fitted (At a cost of €2k+)

Is this necessary or am I being touched for an easy €2,000?

    Cheers,
    E

    Typical Main Dealer!

BTW i know this is an older post, but my Rav4 (D4D 2002) developed the dreaded dual mass flywheel break up at 85,000 miles and i got a friend who is a toyota mechanic to replace it for me.

I was quoted (i used to work in the trade) 450 euro for standard flywheel and clutch kit (cheapest, did get as high as 800 and that was not even looking at toyota prices) from Irish motor factors, but instead bought one from a uk motor factors via ebay delivered to my door for 300 euro!

My friend explained that the reason for dual mass flywheels was to reduce the vibration from the diesel motor to the gearbox and into the cabin, a particular problem when working the jeep hard i.e. towing.

However, replacing the expensive dual mass item with a solid standard flywheel does not make much difference to your everyday driving, and ours has been motoring fine now and its two years on. Even when we tow the caravan during the summer the vibration is not noticable.

Think it was a great idea at the time (a lot of other car manufactures did the same) but its rather expensive to sort when it goes wrong.

Anyway, for anyone facing this issue, (its common on Rav4's and Avensis 2002 D4D models) its not a cheap fix but ignore any quotes of 1000's needing spent.
