Meat and animal derivatives?

Was checking out a dog food for someone. The ingredients had "meat and animal derivatives". There was a reference to the Pet Food Manufacturers Association www.pfma.org.uk So I had a look and I sent off a quick email asking for more information on "meat and animal derivatives".

After 2 months I got back a short and general email with references to a few links. It mainly gave the feeling that derivatives were allowed in EU law and they were doing nothing wrong.

    The first link: http://www.defra.gov.uk/food-farm/byproducts/:-

"Examples of animal by-products are: fallen stock on farms, pet animals when they die, and wild animals where they are suspected of being diseased. Other animal by-products include meat, fish, milk and eggs when they are not intended for human consumption, and other products of animal origin including blood, hides, feathers, wool, bones, horns and hoofs."

Wouldn't that put you right off any dog food with derivatives? I never looked before for this information and was surprised to see it stated on a reputable site.

The other links in the email:-

    http://www.fediaf.org/legislation/

    http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2009:229:0001:0028:EN:PDF

Also on the www.pfma.org.uk site there are some very good petfood companies that promote high quality, human consumable meat as part of their food. What I can't understand is why then be part of an association where other members are using derivatives? I mean the food I use is a member of the PFMA and their website references big time how they use human comsumable meat & that derivatives are rubbish.
