    Hi,

I was surprised (disappointed) to see that my two front tyres have worn a lot since I last checked them. One is a couple of mm over the minimum but the other has worn a lot on the inside and the wire is just beginning to show so I need to change them today. The rear tyres are fine, probably 70%.

My local tyre shop offered 2 x Westlake 225/40 18 tyres fitted, balanced and aligned (the alignment is currently way off) for €220 which seemed like a good enough price until I looked up Westlake tyres and all I could find were negative comments about them being the cheapest Chinese crap you can possibly buy so now I'm a bit stumped.

I don't want to skimp on tyres as I know how important they are when you need to stop in a hurry but at the same time I don't want to pay for a premium brand unless they are actually worth it.

    Any suggestions?

    Ben

You should go for known brands such as kumho, falken etc if youre on a budget, or good part worns, bridgestone, continental or pirelli

I got 2no Kumho tyres for €220 last year from Ace Tyres in Sandyford Ind. Est. The tires felt fine to me and no massive amounts of wear, they also do Falken which i think are in and around the same price. Next step up was Bridgestone/Continental etc for about €150 a tyre. Tyres I got were also the same size you are looking for. hope this helps, burger.

    Thanks Compton,

I can get 2 x Kuhmo's including fitting and alignment for €270. €50 isn't a lot of money to be that bit safer is it??

Remember, you need a four wheel alignment.

    Thanks Lads,

Ace tyres in Sandyford are indeed the lads quoting the Kumho's and seem very professional.

So you don't just get the two tyres you're having fitted aligned, you have to get all 4 aligned? Is that industry standard or am I going to have to insist on all four being aligned?

you could probably get 2 x goodyear F1s or Michelin PS3's for a few quid more,i know which i would go for.Having said that i've had Kumho ecstas in that size before and the weren't the worst tyre i've ever had.

It's the suspension that's being aligned, rather than the tyres. You'll have to ask for a four wheel alignment - not all tyre places can do it.

I've paid €70 for 2 part worn bridgestone 255-35-18 and €70 for 2 part worn Michelin 225-40-18 including fitting and balancing.

Shop around, you could be lucky!

Where was this? Do you mean €70 per corner? Thats what I paid recently, jealous if you get them for €70 per pair!

Nope it was per pair alright. Bloody hard to come by too, these sizes disappear so quick!

Got 4x Uniroyal Rainsport 225 40 18s from Camskill for 90 stg each+23 delivery and had them fitted and balanced for 50 in Red Cow Tyres. The Kumhos were about 30stg cheaper each.
I personally prefer a German or French tyre than a Korean made in China Kumho, but the only cheaper decent alternative was the Jap Falken and I paid a bit more for Uniroyals.
