Tracking calories burned when swimming.

I have recently added swimming 40 lengths a day in the pool at my gym to my fitness regime.

Are there any water proof devices out there (that you could strap to your arm for example) that tracks your heart rate and calories burned as you swim?

Ideally, I'd love to be able to know calories burned, but I'd be happy enough just knowing what my heart rate was as I swam. I know from being on the treadmill and cross trainer the cardio vascular zones that I need to be in for the work out to be having any real weight loss effect.

that's incorrect. A common misunderstanding of the principle.

The fat burning zone, is when the majority of your energy comes from fatty acids in the blood stream.

But its a mistaken to assume this is the best for fat burning. Where the energy comes from at the exact time if exercise is largely irrelevant as your body still has 23 other hours a day where it needs energy. So it will have to take it from what ever is unused.
Total energy burned is the important factor.

It's water proof yes. But does the HRM function work when submerged. Water might affect the reading. Ive never tried so don't know but I did read on a HRM review thread how somebody was using their Polar as a stopwatch when in the pool. They didn't mention heart rate function

The manual says it does but I've never tried it myself. It gave different levels for both the chest strap and watch (i.e the watch can withstand 50m and the chest piece 20m) so I assumed that that meant you could use the chest strap in water with HRM functionality. I could be wrong though.

I've a Polar HRM, the heartrate function works in the pool.

Anyone know where I could get one of these yokes and what they cost? I was in Elverys sports today and the swimming gear they had were goggles and nose plugs.

Eleven us will have them they aren't a swimming specific item. Probably with the running stuff or watches

with free delivery.

I got a Polar FT7 for €89.99 and they were €117.49 in Argos
all the other models are cheaper as well but i like the FT7, it's great...

and fitnessdigital.ie it's €69.95

Iv'e used them for a few things and they were sound,
I'm not pushing them for any reason other than i hate overpaying for things.
