Hope he is caught. But what is do doing in an open prison, he only has 8 month off a 7 years sentence done.

A major search is under way after a prisoner escaped from Loughan Prison in Co Cavan this evening.

Martin McDermott, 25, from Raphoe in Co Donegal, was serving a seven-year sentence for the manslaughter of Garda Gary McLoughlin.

He was reported missing from the prison at around 5pm. The exact circumstances of how he escaped are not yet known.

McDermott was sentenced in July 2011. He had led gardaí on a high-speed chase, which ended when he crashed into a patrol car, killing Garda McLoughlin.

Hope he is caught. But what is do doing in an open prison, he only has 8 month off a 7 years sentence done.

he had 91 previous convictions - many for traffic offences including drink-driving as well as burglary and forgery.

An absolute disgrace! Where else would a scumbag career criminal get transfered to a 'holiday camp' prison after being sentenced for the murder of a young Guard!!

The Minister for Justice has a lot of questions to dodge answer!!
