I also notice that the local motor factors is as cheap or cheaper than the irish websites.

So, shop local and you have your bits home with you instead of waiting a week!

Yeah i tried them also, they wanted €98 for rear discs and pads where as i got better quality ones from micksgarage.I always found the local factors cheaper.

Buyer beware, ordered service parts for Citreon Xsara Picasso off an online Irish car parts website, everything arrived fairly promptly. Got home from work yesterday evening and tore into the service, drained oil, removed oil filter and changed air filter.
Went to put on the new oil filter and found it was a different one, my local motor factor was closed so left without a car for the day.
Went to local motor factor today and he charged me €12.50 for a Mann filter HU 612 X which fits into a plastic cover that does not get replaced, unlike other filters which screw on and off.
I'm not even sure if this is the correct filter since it has a plastic piece with a oring seal on it which is different to the one I took off, which didn't.
    Anyone know the correct filter?
    03 Xsara Picasso 1.6 Petrol

    Thanks

I got discs last week for a car I was repairing and these were the prices:
    Ebay: €84.35 including postage
Micks garage €108.02 including delivery (free over €10)
Local Motor factor : €64.50 (Actually was a lot less on trade discount but taking away the trade discount they would have cost €64.50) These were the exact same brand as micksgarage by the way.

I had the parts home with me. I also could return them if they weren't right for any reason. Plus, if I have a problem with them in the future, I can sort it out locally.

I am also keeping money in the irish economy and keeping jobs in the local economy and best of all, I am saving money!!

    Shop local!

I have used www.eurocarparts.com over the past few years. I've opted for their Bosch service parts and they seem pretty good.

The only downside is that they charge £17 delivery so your order needs to be of high value to make it worthwhile. Either that or you can get to Belfast to pick the order up from their Belfast outlet.

I have bought several things online but I find it's always worth shopping around. Most of the time the local factors come up best. In addition you can always go back if the part is wrong instead of trying to explain in writing to a twit in another country. I have always found Mick's Garage dearer than the local factors.

I use Mister-Auto.ie for most stuff these days, their return policy is very good.
Last order I made they sent 3 spark plugs instead of 4 I rang them and they sent the 4th one out.
I also had a wrong airfilter in another order and they simply refunded the money and said keep the old filter.
They are very competitive for postage as well, 7.90

Yeah i always found micks garage dearer than my local factors but recently either they have reducded prices or local factors has gone up.

Why would you recommend a compay that messed up two of your orders? I would allow for one mistake with any online site but any more than that...
I have used most sites but always go back to buypartsbuy.co.uk. Always get the order spot on. expensive on delivery so it does have to be a high value order to make worthwhile. Local factors for low value parts.

Because they rectified the order quickly and at no cost to me.
Thats two out of many more orders that I have got from them.
Its the law of averages with buying stuff online, sometimes things go wrong, how the error is dealt with is the measure of the company.
I have got wrong stuff from motorfactors as well, Mistakes can happen.

Two motor factors that I have found to be cheap - CPL in Maynooth and even cheeper AutoCare, Dundrum.

Lots of cheap spurious parts out there too and some are a waste of money. Make sure you compare like with like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,960 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

I think that a lot depends of the individual Factor. I have found huge variations in prices. When I had my last big problem ebay saved me because they were open over Xmas. I also find ebay invaluable for dealer parts. For example when my Jeep died on Dec 23 I spoke to my main dealer & they told me that the earliest that they could order any part was the 3rd of Jan  By using ebay I had everything that I needed by the 30th Dec.

If you are buying online note that a lot of sellers will say that they won't post overseas but if you ask they will post to Ireland. Also a lot will have a "standard international postage" which is too high for small items. Again most will reduce it if you ask.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,906 ✭✭✭jayok

Well, I've been buying parts over the internet and used ebay, miser-auto.ie and micksgarage. This in combination with a local motor factors

What I've learned is that you really need to shop around.

For example, I can get a Genuine Honda oil filter shipped from a UK dealer to me cheaper than I could buy in Ireland! €11 vs €14.

I need ARB links and cheapest I got in Ireland was €37 each. From the UK I got the two for €33.

I needed NGK spark plugs and my local motor factor was the cheapest at €20 each. Online was more expensive by the time shipping was in.

So word of advise - shop around, you will save money.

EXCEPTION: Halford's is expensive for everything! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

Got caught out last week, found Thursday night I had no wheelbearings on the shelf for my 110, forgot to include on the last order from the UK.

No problem thinks I, I'm working in Clonmel, have the Timken number and there's two suppliers. Goes to first one, that'll be €35 each and you won't find cheaper :eek: Ended up buying them at another place for €49 the pair, still bloody expensive but I needed them urgently.

I've just done an order to a UK specialist including two OEM hub bearing kits with seals and gaskets for £20 each.

I do agree that some Irish suppliers are becoming competitive, for instance you can get a decent winch package for 4x4s here at less than some of the UK competition. As said, shop around!

Definately agree, it totally depends what you're looking for. Last week I got a set of front pads for my Freelander from Micks for €35 delivered (arrived next day) and my local motor factors wanted €85 + vat. No brainer, but maybe the next thing I'm looking for might be the other way around.

As for the Halford thing......are they having a laugh??????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 416 ✭✭trixyben

Only used the net to buy parts the odd time, i prefer to go into motor factors see the part make sure its the right part etc...I have 5 motor factors numbers stored in my phone and i normally price them all and the prices can vary alot so best checking round...

as for Halfords i dont buy any parts or that that as they are way overpriced, but do buy tools there and oil if its on special offer so it has its uses

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 814 ✭✭✭JerCotter7

I must be using a different internet.

Motor factors clutch = €300 (it's a special clutch that comes in 3 parts. Release bearing, pressure plate and clutch) Sure.
OEM sachs clutch from c3 = €128 (same parts as the spurious but better)

Motor factors shock = €150 for standard height. Wont work on my lowered car.
Coilovers = €1000 €250 per corner but I get damper, camber, caster, spring rate and right height adjustments on the front and all the above but caster on the back.

Motor factors brake pads = €28 for front brake pads without wear sensor. And the squeal. Dont have ceramic brake pads either. Didn't even have ceramic brake pads,
BMW direct UK = €50 I think.Would have to post to someone in England and get them to post here. It would be more hastle but you get front and back brake pads, handbrake shoes and front and back wear sensors.

5 metres of crappy speaker wire costs about €4 No idea what gauge it even is. Probably 26.
    90 metres of 16 gauge €60.

Basically motor factors here are a rip off. Majority of stuff I get OEM. I also get wipers, brake fluid, fuel filters and air filters from c3 which are OEM. For about half the price of the motor factors which are also spurious. Only thing I get here is petrol, oil and oil filter. And surprisingly tyres. Everything else I get from overseas.

Even scrapyards here are almost overpricing. €150 is ridiculous for a used cat back but my NCT was that evening  Rare to find a competitive one but there is some.

Not sure if you can get charged import duty but if you can I have been lucky so far. But even with it most things would still turn out cheaper.

When I lived in the UK Halfords were considered to be good value. I was pleased to see them opening in Galway until I saw the prices. Even their tools are expensive.

They do have sales on there tools from time to time where there might be 50-60% off, I bought most of my tools there and they have the lifetime guarantee with them, so if a socket cracks/breaks for example take it in and they replace there and then, although in 5 years I havent had to go back in to have anything replaced yet

I have seen, I think it is, Toolzone tools in Lidl/Aldi & then seen the same in Halfords. Personally, in years of home use, I have never broken & socket or spanner. The only tools that I would invest a bit more in are items like ratchets when they are subject to wear.

I can't understand what market Halfords are aiming at. Most people that want quality tools can find them cheaper online & the DIY people can get them cheaper in Lidl, Aldi & B&Q. It's interesting that B&Q have expanded their car tool range, you can even buy individual sockets, especially as they share some sites with Halfords in the UK.

There is great value out there in some motor factors, you have to find it ;)

Motor factors clutch, brake pads and shocks are a fairly meaningless description, the shocks could have been monroe, bilstein or boge, the pads could be mintex or moprod etc etc etc :)

It definitely pays to shop around. I bought a clutch master cyl from a local breaker this week because they had it on the shelf and I needed it asap.
    It was
    30 euros local breaker used
    88 euros local motor factor
    35 euros mister auto
So if I was prepared to wait I could've bought a new one for a fiver more, plus 7.50 postage. Or if motor factors had the parts on the shelf people would probably pay top dollar for the convenience.

True I am comparing OEM vs spurious ;)

I see what you mean but most motor factors standard items are not going to match OEM quality. Unless you specify a higher quality item. One thing I would stick local for is tools. Never know when you may need the warranty on a set of teng tools.

Would emphasise comparing prices not just online v bricks & mortar outlets, but online v online outlets too.
    Here's an example:
One .ie online store has a BOSCH 0 986 221 023 ignition coil @ €45.20 incl VAT with Free Delivery.
Another .ie online store has the same Bosch ignition coil @ €25.72 incl VAT + €7.90 Delivery.
With the latter .ie store 'there is a single delivery charge of €7.90 on all orders', i.e. buy as many items at a time as you like, same single €7.90 delivery charge applies.
Stocked up today with ignition coils needed for particular repair and filters (air/oil/fuel) & plugs for next two car services to take advantage of single delivery charge.

HU612X looks good, just beware that when you remove the old filter the plastic spike doesn't come off with the old filter so maybe that's why it won't fit.

Got a coolant temperature sensor for 6 euro on ebay. Local Mf was looking for 35! Find ebay great for small electrical things like that.

Got a cambelt kit delivered for 120 euro. Includes belt, tensioner, water pump, two bolts and washers. Contitech brand off misterauto.ie.

Is this a good price? I've a TDI vw transporter.

True, it's great for small things that are expensive in motor factors etc.

But, of course, it's usually not great for bulky/heavy things. I spent quite a while searching online for a cheap breaker bar and 30mm socket, just to get the axle nut off my Micra for a CV boot change.
I was getting quotes from €20 (a parts shop somewhere in Finglas) to over €40, just for the bar :( And a tenner for a single socket! Ouch.
One shop in Phibsboro quoted me about €40 for a 1/2" bar, plus €17.50 for a 3/4" socket and another tenner or so for a 1/2"-3/4" adapter :pac:

Any ideas where to pick up things like this without breaking my tiny piggy bank (or being arrested for theft :p)?

There's an offer in lidl on thursday. 80 quid for all the sockets you'll ever need. A bit of scaffolding pipe of a lonely building site made me a good breakers bar.

If your were going to drop €90 on that set, I'd recommend maybe looking at either Halford Pro 90 piece set, for 76.99

    http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_163079_langId_-1_categoryId_212410

or if you can throw an extra few bob at it the 150 piece set at €125.99

    http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_173083_langId_-1_categoryId_212410

I have the bigger one, and there is very little if any other bits or sockets I need that aren't included,

I've used the set for services, brakes, hub nuts and more, no problems

The lidl one has 216 bits for 90euro. Better quality too from what i've been reading. Halfrauds give a guarantee on non moving parts but that not worth sh1t.

I can't comment on the quality of the Lidl stuff, although I've got various other tools from there and never had a problem, and I've not bothered checking online reviews, as I'm not in the market for a set.

With regards to the Halfords stuff, in fairness the lifetime warranty they offer is more to cover manufacturer problems rather than general wear and tear.

I wouldn't touch the non-pro range of tools in Halfords, and I'm as annoyed as anybody else by the spotty teenage blundering that passes for customer service in their shops, but I cant fault the quality of the tools I have bought from there, and there is a large amount of non-Halfords reviews where they are highly rated online

Back on thread I bought a Vag-com ebay cable. About 15 euro. Together with the vcds lite freeware off the ross-teck site it works great. You can scan and clear ALL fault codes for the engine block. With a bit of reading you can check your MAF and MAP are working as they should and a few other bits. I recommend one if you a older VAG car/van, with the 16 pin OBD 2 style connection.

Saved me a heap of money sorting out a loss of power problem. Everyone I talked to said was the MAF sensor, when it wasn't at all.

    Needed a new lambda sensor.

Local Motor Factors - €135 excluding vat

    Mister-Auto.ie
    (x) - Local motor factors prices

    Lambda sensor - €52
    (166)
    Air Filter - €10.85
    (19)
    Oil Filter - €4.19
    (8)
    Cabin Air Filter - €14.53
    (25)
    Brake pads set - €36.40
    (43)
    4 Spark Plugs - €7.28
    (8.60)

    Total of 125.25 including vat

Delivery charge of €7.90 brings it to €133.15 including vat.

Massive difference for me there. I also got some oil and air filters for my dad and my brothers 2 cars as I was getting my stuff there anyway so they won't have to pay delivery. They will just give me the cost of their items.

I went with spurious parts for the most part and it's the same as what I get in the local motor factors for a fraction of the price. 1 or 2 items are a different brand but for the most part it's the same identical item.

I used to always just pop into the local motor factors but I'm not working these days and every cent counts nowadays. If the cost had been the same or near enough I would have most likely went with local place so I could have the parts and done the job rather than waiting and along with spending in local business.

^ What car was that for Yawns?

Got some stuff off mister auto myself last week. There prices seem very good especially with offers on. Good brands too. Hard to know what your getting of ebay sometimes.

Got a nearside rear lamp from Micksgarage. I usually use Bradshaws, but Micksgarage was able to come in €15, with free delivery cause it was over €50, and had it within two days
