Did it work before? Remove the wireless network from the list and reconnect.

CapsLock/NumLock on? Type the correct key into notepad then copy and paste to connect.

    Encryption type not supported?

No it has never successfully connected to the vaio. I checked the first two suggestions to no avail. How do I check the encryption??

How do I check the encryption??

You'll need to connect with a computer to the modem, then type
    http://3.home

into the addressbar of the web browser. this should get you into the router menu (may require a password), there you can change encryption and WiFi protection key. You can also disable encryption completely, meaning you don't need a password (not recommended, but OK to test).

Having said that, a four year old Vaio should support WPA-PSK, but you'll never know. ;)

So, if you can access the modem from another computer, disable encryption (authentication), save the changes and try again. (Note, the other computer will have reconnect as well as the settings for the connection have changed). If you then get a connection with the Vaio, try again with WEP and a password (not very safe but slightly better than no protection). ;)
