Hi, my local independent filling station has Lotos brand semi-synth oil at a good price, it's Polish stuff, has anyone had experience of it? It's either that or Lidl's best for our cars, a '97 Polo and a '00 Almera. Ta.

Has it got ACEA and API specifications? What grade is it?

The specs are fairly good, 10-40 semi, SL/CF, A3/B3, VW 505.00.
€13 for 5 Litres with a bottle of screen wash!

The specification is good although most newer cars have moved on and require a lighter fully synthetic oil. It's definitely good enough for a '97 Polo and a '00 Almera.

Lotos is made in the same factory that produces Castrol oils in Poland. Towards the end of production there are minor additive differences and then they are bottled in each brands bottles.

If the Polo is petrol, this is good; if it's diesel it's no good, you need VW 505 01 IIRC.

Its the same case with standard many oils, fuels etc.

Thanks guys, they do seem reputable. The date stamped on the cans is from late last year, I suppose its a "sell by" rather than when it was made, so possibly that's the reason for the low price. I know motor oil has a finite shelf life, but hey, half the stuff I buy on offer in my local Tesco is nearly out of date. I read that motor oil that's gone off looks cloudy, so I'll check for that.

That's great value, I'd buy a few of them no bother. €20 for 5l of Carlube 10w40 was the cheapest I've seen retailed anywhere.

I believe Comma Oil "make" Mobil in England.

Its simple really, oil costs monumental amounts of money to refine so there are only a hand full of companies in the world supplying refined oil suitable for use in engines or various other applications. So most engine oils come from the same places and the various brands, comma, castrol, mobil 1 or whoever, buy all the same pre-refined oil and just add their own specific additives, manufacturer specific ingredients and branding.
