If I get a new Ipad3 4G in the US it will be coupled to AT&T or Verizon. If I bring it back to Ireland can I simply change micro SIM card to one for a local mobile network?

There currently is no 4g spectrum in ireland.

As for swapping sims I think you can do that

I think the US ones are network locked - I think AT&T and Verizon use different 4G's.

4G seems to be one massive clusterfu@k - how the network/telecoms regulation people could have allowed it to splinter into so many different techs/bandwidths is staggering.

The iPad1 and 2 were unlocked anyway and I'd expect the 'New iPad' will be the same but best to wait and see.

It'd be the AT&T one that you need to choose as well.

Yes Apple have said its world ready
Both the ATT and Verizon model of iPad can roam worldwide on GSM/UMTS networks. In countries without compatible 4G LTE networks, the new iPad will operate on GSM network technologies such as HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA. When you travel internationally, you can use a micro-SIM card from a local carrier.

iPads are not* locked as iPhones are (unless bought outright) (*except in Japan).

The 4g iPad isn't really 4g. It's what Americans call 4g which is really 3.5g LTE.

    it's explained here: http://ipad.appstorm.net/general/opinion/the-new-ipad-and-apples-massive-4g-mistake/

all iphone 4s are unlocked all other iphones aren't unless bought off apple

ALL iPhones are locked to their carrier, unless bought directly from Apple.

Yes it is ALL iphone 4ss are unlocked

    I quote

    "SIM-free and ready to use.
When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it SIM-free. So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time." - apple

Once again, you link to the Apple Store, which I say is unlocked. You obviously don't understand english, or you're being deliberately thick, so I'll leave it. Go and get an iPhone 4s from 3 or Meteor or eMobile and try a different carriers sim-card in it, and tell me how you get on.

You obviously don't understand World Phone yourself, so here's the definition from Phone Arena:
    "Glossary

    World Phone
World phones can be used in most continents due to the fact that they support several working frequencies and/or communication protocols"

You may have got lucky with your phone from VF, but all iPhones are locked to carrier unless you buy from Apple, as per their website.

WRONG! It means the the 4s is designed to operate on all world frequency bands, CDMA (the band Verizon in the us operate on) and GSM ( the band almost all other countries use)

You buy it from apple, it's unlocked, you buy it from a network it's locked to that network.

Go ahead try another sim in your vodafone phone and come back and tell us what happens.

And apologise to whiterebel when you do.

Only iPhones purchased directly from Apple are guaranteed to be sim free. If you refer to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937 you will see that most carriers lock their phones...

I'd be fairly sure that Vodafone have disabled the personal hotspot functionality. As with the iphone, it's up to the carriers if they want to allow it.
