The Eken T01 delivers a fast and smooth Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich experience at an incredibly pricepoint. Eken are the largest Chinese tablet manufacturer and have an unbeatable track record of producing best-selling tablets (Tabtech/Eken M009, M013). Now that they have jumped into the Allwinner A10 boat (same chipset as the recent Ainol Novo tablets) we just had to jump aboard too!

Powerful Allwinner A10 CPU with Mali-400 GPU The Allwinner A10 CPU and Mali400 GPU combination is the same as found in the Ainol Novo tablets. We were one of the first UK companies to appreciate the immense power of this CPU, and the torrent of tablets now being released using it does not surprise us at all. This little CPU boasts more than enough power to perform all tasks asked of it, from 3D gaming to HD video playback. It is truly amazing that a tablet at this price can deliver this kind of performance.

7" 800x480 5-point Multi-touch Capacitive Display The display resolution and type is the same as found in the Novo 7 Advanced and Novo 7 Advanced 2. The 800x480 resolution is great for browsing the web, watching videos, or playing games. The display is of course the capacitive type, for super responsive scrolling and multi-touch operation.

512MB RAM and 4GB Storage 512MB RAM is perfect for running any Android App and for significant multi-tasking of many Apps. Internal flash storage is 4GB, but the Eken does feature a micro-SD card slot so storage can be expanded easily and inexpensively up to a suitably large 32GB. The Eken also features a USB port so external USB storage can be used.

Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich' 'Ice Cream Sandwich' is the latest version of Google's Android operating system. It is a major release for Google as it brings together the tablet and phone Android versions. The user experience is much enhanced compared to previous versions with menus and settings optimised for tablet use. The enhancements make Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich a very easy and intuitive operating system to use.

Front 1.3 Megapixel Camera The Eken T01 features a front webcam so you can use it for video chat or taking photos.

Battery Life The Allwinner A10 CPU has very low power requirements, giving you around 3-4 hours of tablet use with WiFi.

Android Market and Flash Our Eken T01 tablets have fully working Android Market pre-installed so 100,000s of Apps including Google Maps, Skype, Vevo, and Angry Birds are available for easy download and installation. Flash installs from Market but only works with certain sites. Youtube works, BBC iPlayer doesn't. Perfect Flash will come in a future firmware update.

Wi-Fi Connectivity Wi-Fi(n) is built in so you can easily connect to your home network, office network, or Wi-Fi hotspot whilst on the move. If you have an Android or Apple phone you can connect to your phone's internet connection easily using the tethering feature. Many external USB 3G dongles are supported.

HDMI TV-out The built in mini-HDMI port allows video playback on a TV at up to 2160p, so the Eken T01 can be used as a Media Player. Virtually all video and audio formats are supported (MKV, AVI, H264, MP3, WMA, AAC). The Mali-400 GPU in this tablet is hugely powerful and allows the crystal clear playback of 1080p video on your TV or projector.

Build Quality and Portability Build quality is rock solid, as you'd expect from a company with Eken's huge experience. The tablet is relatively thin at 13mm and nicely light at 356g. A great benefit of the 7" tablets is that they are highly portable. It is easy to carry this Eken everywhere with you on the move. The Eken T01we sell has all black casing.

Q: Android Market?
A: As of 13-MARCH the Eken T01 comes pre-installed with Android Market so you can easily access all your favourite Apps like Google Maps, Angry Birds, Opera Mobile, Vevo. etc.

Q: Flash?
A: As of 13-MARCH Flash installs from Market and everything appears to be OK but it works patchily. We expect this to be fixed imminently with a firmware update.

Q: Firmware (ROM) Updates?
A: Eken will be releasing regular updates for the T01. Updating will be by Livesuit ROM flash, the same as with the Ainol Novo tablets. Because Eken are a massive manufacturer and have a whole range of tablets based on the same hardware as the T01, we are very confident that the Eken ICS firmware will quickly become one of the best.

Having had previous experience with an EKEN tablet, i'm betting that

- the battery is poor - starts out at a couple of hours charge and within a few months won't keep a charge at all
- the wifi drops out constantly
- it's poorly made and plastic-y
- the touchscreen is inaccurate even after calibration
- the viewing angles are tiny and the image is grainy and looks even lower than the stated 800x480
- connectors stop working after a while, including eventually the power connector

I could be wrong, but that's what the previous EKEN i got was like .. mind you it was resistive and not capacitive
