I heard from the friend that it will be available on 19 of March, but not sure whether its 100% correct!

im wondering how this update will installed? trough Kies?
my Kies a bit glitchy, doesn't like my SGS2 anymore, is it might be the case of rooting? or Kies have to work fine with rooted phones?

19th of March is when it will be released in UK, i had a rooted galaxy s and it worked fine on kies so yours should work even when rooted

Samsung are rolling out ICS to sim free Galaxy S2 phones on March 19th in the UK so I presume this means Ireland too. Network locked phones normally take longer.

O2 in the UK have said that Galaxy S2 owners should see ICS hit their handsets in mid April so I imagine the Irish Networks will be around that time frame too

    Thnx to the amigo

Here is detailed instruction for upgrading SGS2 to Final Official ICS 4.0.3 from Samsung

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭yomamasflavour

Look at the reviews first though.
I've the official ICS on my S2 and it might as well be gingerbread.
Samsung ruined it with this touchwiz crap.

Can you give more details, as im still in firmware download process.
whats wrong with the Samsung official ICS?

    Feedback - After Update

I finally moved to ICS 4.0.3 by flowing the instruction in this thread
I used "3 files update" - as its clean update and will fully wipe your system.

the flashing time was 3.28 min. didn't have any problems on the first boot, all went smoothly.

from my personal point of view it worth 100% to upgrade your firmware as you getting many nice things in the phone, here is a lits what i discover and like so far since last 24h of use:

    1) Improved multitasking management and app switching system
    2) Finally native Data counter which allow u to set up bill date, the limit of bandwidth, warning notification before u reach the limit. in addition it represent in details how much each app consumed, and u can check overall network use from/until date
    3) Improved animation
    4) the keyboard now better responding
    5) a bit more responding quick call/sms in contacts (when u slide left/right on the contact name)
    6) a lot of new options for developers
    7) improved security includes several options from "Where's My Droid" or grant full access to the mentioned app
    8) New Gmail look - like it very much!
    9) Chrome Browser (however it doesn't support flash, even after flash install from the market) so i back to native browser
    10) face unlock - i didn't try that yet

so from my point of view it is worth to upgrade

P.S. for those who are freaky scared to loos warranty by upgrading the phone:
you will not loose your warranty as you updating official but not custom firmware, you will not get triangle on the boot screen and counter wouldn't be incremented, the method described in the link is 100% save.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,157 ✭✭✭srsly78

I was running a custom rom before I flashed this official one. The yellow exclamation mark (showing I had tampered with the phone) is now gone :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Briksins

the yellow triangle might be gone, but i think your counter stays incremented and if you go to the service they will eventually discover that u was flashing custom ROM...

there was some hacking tutorial how to reset triangle, unfortunately its on Russian language, so u will have to search for English, but there is defiantly solution

I am running Checkrom but want to try ICS out, did you do a full wipe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Briksins

ellinguistico yes, i think you have to do full wipe if u want to fully remove the custom firmware and migrate to official ICS

Getting rid of yellow triangle is actually very simple, just get an USB Jig.

I noticed a while back I had the same message on kies. A little googling tells me the reason is the "CSC" code. I have a sim free phone and under that message you mention is the Current firmware version at the end of which is a 3 character code in brackets ... on my own phone this is "(KOR)". This, apparently, is something called the CSC code and is regional; KOR being the home of Samsung, Korea. In Europe , or in Ireland at least, this should be XEU.

I've not actually done it yet as I was waiting for ICS to stabilise, but this is changed by entering
    *#272*IMEI#

where IMEI is the IMEI of your phone. You'll find that in the settings/about phone.
When you enter this you'll be prompted to select a new CSC and as I said XEU is the one you want.
I think this change returns you phone to a clean install so you'll want to back up first. It's probably a good idea do this anyway. Since it's wiping everything I was holding out until I decided to migrate to ICS.

I tried this myself but alas I still get the same message that the device does not support software upgrading. So I'm not sure how to proceed now - except perhaps using odin to apply the update.

    cheers rommy.
I downloaded *some* version of Samsung's stock ICS and used odin to flash it after posting that last message. I'm new to android so I was a little hesitant but it was actually all very straight forward. The most difficult task being to decide what to load - there seems to be an awful lot of variants so I'm not 100% sure what I have :) But it is Samsung & ICS and most importantly it is working with zero problems. UI wise it's a small upgrade on GB but it's still nice - I was disappointed it didn't have that nice google stock look the nexus has. Kies still doesn't allow software upgrades with is but odin was so straight forward I don't think I'll bother with Kies anymore.

    thanks again for the tip.

The meteor official firmware will be again full of crappy apps which you cannot delete without root.

im already several month on 4.0.3 and very much happy! especially for the battery live

My Galaxy S2 was bought in Carphone Warehouse and has no branding on it whatsoever. Its on Meteor contract though, but it's unlocked out of the box and works with any sim.

Am I still bound to waiting for Meteor's update? :S

I wouldn't be too concerned lads. Can't see any improvement so far. It's laggy enough, the text on websites looks muddled. Lots of spam included aswel from Samsung and ye can't even use skygo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 Ghost_of_ED209

    Hey,

According to the tech guys on the Meteor forum its a staggered roll out...

We (the forum team) received confirmation internally that the update had been approved for release as of the 20th of April and should be available to users now.

I contacted the team responsible earlier to find out what is happening here. Personally speaking I believe that the issue is that it's a staggered roll out to IMEI's, but once I get confirmation I'll post it up here.
