Duty free in Dublin but transiting Gatwick to US.

    Hiya folks.

I am hoping some of the many well travelled folks here may be able to answer a few questions - just spent an hour looking at this but still inconclusive.

    Family holiday going DUB-GATWICK-ORLANDO.

EI then Virgin. Checked through luggage but not codeshare.

If we buy duty free fags and spirits in Dublin, will we get through security ok in Gatwick? Does DUB use the special sealable bags and do the yanks recognise and accept them? Will we fall foul of the 100ml liquids rules? The luggage will be gone so we cannot put them in our cases !

We will be going through flight connections so hope to have a seemless transfer.

Anyone got any observations or experiences of this?

    Thanks all.

Any liquids will go into a sealed ICAO bag that will allow you to transit through LGW. As the MCO is your final destination and you've no onward connection there's no issue with the bag. The receipt will be in the bag, just make sure you have the bag handy when you pass through any more security at flight connections at LGW as they'll need to see it.

Cigarettes are grand, they don't need to go into a tamper evident bag.

The ICAO standard tamper evident bags aren't recognised by the US so if you were transiting through a US airport on a flight ex-LGW (DUB-LGW-MCO-MSY)for example and your luggage was checked all the way through then you'd end up surrendering it to the TSA as they wouldn't let you through with it.

USCBP/TSA in KJFK would disagree with you there. They had put our cigarettes (not even for me, the hassle :P ) in bags when we were there two years ago.

The Duty Free's in the US seal them in bags for delivery to pax at the airbridge when boarding begins.

Precisely. I presumed they did this because of customs though, otherwise why not let customers simply buy the product there and then and take it with them?

It's mainly because most US airports have no exit control,ie. after going through security you can still easily exit again if you wish. There'd be nothing to stop someone 'borrowing' a boarding card,go through security, purchase duty free, and then exit the pier/terminal with the product and return boarding card to proper owner.

Some US Duty Free stores are also landside(such as JFK T4) which is why they can't just give you the product as you could just walk out the door with it.

Sorry but why would you bother buying duty free smokes and booze on the way to the US, they'll be cheaper there than in duty free, especially the cigarettes.

Carrolls cigarettes, generally cannot be got outside of Ireland. I did see them many a moon ago in EWR when EI flew there, but not since.

You have a point about the booze....

That would be one of the main reasons people buy fags and booze here on outbound flights to the US. Carrolls,Major and JPB are pretty much impossible to get outside of Ireland. US Duty Frees tend to do big american brands,Marlboro Red & Lights,Winston/Parliment/Lucky Strike etc.

Most major spirits can be got over there but there's a lot of Irish Whiskeys and Cream Liquers(with the exception of Baileys which you can get pretty much anywhere in the world) that are very difficult to get outside of Ireland.

Buy the ciggies in Dublin and pick up booze at Duty Free in Gatwick once through the transit area - this way absolutely no issues.

Makes sense but scheduled arrival is at 10.10 and departure is at 11.15 !!!!

Dont think we will be doing much shopping hahaha

I know its a VERY tight connection but have been assured its ok.

Anyway, trying not to think to hard about delays:eek:

Sorry, as a non-smoker had forgotten about the need for your "own" brand of smokes.

Remember to mention when checking in and also to the air stewards that you have a tight connection they might be able to help you get off the plane first.

I would have thought that because you are travelling via the UK you could not buy duty free products at Dublin. You could only buy duty paid products.

You can buy Duty Free in Dublin once your connecting flight taking you outside the EU is on the same day. You'll need to show proof obviously that you're flying on,boarding card or flight itinerary usually suffice.

There'll be no bother. Just be aware if you want to purchase any more than 200 cigarettes that you may be liable to a $10 duty on every carton above your allowance. This will be applied by USCBP in Dublin when you go to clear Immigration & Customs.

Any alcohol purchases above 1 litre are also liable to a duty of $3 per litre. You'd have no problem bringing alcohol through as you arrive and depart from the same terminal at PHL so won't need to go through security again.
