E90 ABS Light (error code 5E20)

Hi all, the ABS light got lit up on my E90 ('06, 320d), once clocked 81Kmiles. Ran computer check and found an ABS error 5E20 - module/pump failure.
Any ideas if it is possible to reset it so the car'd pass the NCT then, as the it is spotless otherwise. The only difference is now that the wheels get locked when breaking heavily, other than that drive like a saint anyway, so could drive it without any fixing for another while..
    Cheers.

Your brakes (Not breaks) are the only thing that keeps you alive every day on your car. Go get it fixed properly for your sake, and that of your passengers.

That is the usual pressure sensor fault with the Teves Mk60 ABS unit which is fitted to your car. The same unit is fitted to VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Ford, Mazda, Volvo and Honda and gives the same trouble in all applications.

There is no way to get the light to go out for the NCT without fixing the cause of the problem.

BMW supply a repair kit which if you get an independent garage to supply and fit will cost you around €450.

I know BMW were covering these under goodwill where the owner only paid a small percentage of the total cost of the job. I think your car being 06 is probably too old for them to cover it but it is worth a phone call at least.

Thanks for your reply. ABS is an additional feature in the newer cars. The older cars do not even have an ABS. If you do mad driving, then such error would result in a discomfort when breaking - it is not as smooth or make car slide, but only an imbicile would drive like this.

ABS is additionally linked to your Traction Control system on the E60. Just because a Capri came with no ABS doesn't mean it's alright for your car not to have it too. It's all well and good at the moment, but the day a nice rain comes after this dry spell, you're going to have a lovely greasy soup on the road in front of you and the car struggling to keep the car in a straight line under braking with the wheels locked up, and no functioning ABS module to assist the traction control. Uncontrolled slides can happen in the wet at speeds as low as 10mph, it wouldn't take someone driving like an imbecile to cause an accident.

Thanks George, makes a lot of sense to me. I was looking into replacing the module+pupm with an used one at a cost of £250, but then would take my own risk how long such one would last. A phone call is a good idea though, never thought of it as deemed my car too be too old for any type of such quibbling straight away.

Personally I don't see the value in the used option. I think spending €450 on a lasting fix makes more sense than spending €300 on a used part which could fail again next week.

George, wonder, where the part could be sourced at the €450.. The BMW garage qoutes me €1600

They are obviously quoting for the full unit. Ask for the price of the repair kit. Or better still find an independent who is familiar with the problem and let them supply and fit the part.

We haven't done one on a BMW for quite a while so I don't have an up to date price. They were approx €220 + VAT last time I got one which was last June. I know the VW version of the kit has gone up by €100 and now costs €270 ex VAT so maybe the BMW one has gone up in price as well. But €1600 is definitely the price for a full ABS unit, which you should not need.

I think the rebuild kit for BMWs is closer to 600 now. It definitely used to be around the 250 mark.

Checked on RealOEM - the rebuild kit for a 2006 e90 is 1105 Dollars, so about 600 Euro seems right.

Would you do the fitting if I had a part, at what cost? Cheers.

For fitting and code clearing you would be looking at about €150.
