Why are so many people having babies?

A lot of women and couples I know are having babies. Every second day I hear of someone else having a baby.

Why is this? We are in a deep recession and it doesn't make much financial sense to be having babies?

    Semi serious reason,
you are probably of the age where people have kids. That generation (the popes children) are also a pretty numerous generation (kids of the last baby boom apparently)

    Recession, Depression, Boom or Bust...
It's how the human race survives....... Things were bad in the 70's/80's and larger families were the norm then..

Lots of people know that having children will alter their financial spending pattern but the want to have a family drives them to make sacrifices..

People are broke, we are in a recession..

They have no money to go to the pub, cinema, restaurants etc..

So they stay in and have the sex..

    = babies

    :)

The same reasons as ever - inability to find meaning in their lives, boredom, parental pressure to "give" them a grandchild, peer pressure, etc etc.

In our work place a load of redundancies have been announced.

So almost every woman that can get pregnant has gotten pregnant as their terms and conditions cannot be altered when they are out on maternity leave.

I call it "The Hymen Maneuver" :pac:

Do you know what their financial situation is? Babies don't cost that much for the first few years anyway.

a lot of women just stopped paying for the pill when they ran out of money. Theres a few 18-20 year olds around here preggers for that very reason

That and people have a fairly limited window in which to safely reproduce. In women that window is less than 20 years and at present during a lot of the first half of that time she is likely to be in full-time education. For men the window is wider but although men can still reproduce into old age their fertility falls dramatically after the first 25-30 years of their fertility. They too are likely to be in full-time education for most of the first decade.

There is also the fact that even if you did have a good chance of having safe healthy offspring at an older age most people prefer to have children when they are young enough to actually take care of the children. And as active parenting takes about 20 years most people prefer to have their babies in their 20s and early-mid 30s so they aren't in their 70s when the kids finally move out.

And lastly having children in a recession rather than a boom is a good idea in a lot of ways. Many people who had children in and around '05 had, in hindsight, unrealistic expectations of the lifestyle they could expect as parents and are suffering more now. But people who decide to have children now are able to make a more informed decision about their income and what lifestyle they can expect. As you tend to actively parent for a couple of decades and as history has shown an economic pattern of boom-bust the odds are you will be parenting through some sort of recession anyway, so starting during tough times means you are going in with your eyes further open

Must be middle-class , in the working class areas when they run out of money they take it in the wrong'un.

so you're saying the answer to married men not getting any sex from their wives is to have them sit at home all day, bored, so they'll pounce? hmmm. interesting.

I've noticed for the past few years there's a crap load of women pregnant. an actual crap load.

I`m pregnant because I`ve waited till I was ready and I always wanted to be a mother. Yes we are in recession and I might have agreed that its slightly irresponsible but I had some girly problems so I`ll take it when I can get it at 30 I`m pushin it. This child will be much wanted and much loved - no amount of money can make up for a lack of those things.

something like that, just seems that a few girls lost their jobs and didnt bother telling the fella, i would spout on about how they did it intentionally for a council house but this isnt one of those threads

Procreation is a situation when two people have a wild imagination. A man sticks his thing in a womans location and fertilises her for 40 weeks gestation.

Well yeah I mean losing your job means you can sign on, if you're unwilling to forego €20 of the almost €800 in dole per month to protect yourself while engaging in sex then you're either retarded or you've a hidden agenda.

If they were shíte entry level jobs then I wouldn't be surprised if the, lets call them non-career driven women, decided the social welfare lifestyle would suit them better than trying to find another job.

Not sure there is any big link to external factors like recession for baby booms outside of the products of the last baby boom starting to have kids themselves.

I read a post on here just the other day (I won't link to it) of a girl in her early 20's who had found out she's pregnant, she's unemployed and her BF earns minimum wage, but yet they're happy they're about to have a child.

In other words, some people are just bat shít crazy.

I've been astonished at the amount of social engineering theory put forward since I joined this site. People honestly think that the human race reproducing is something that needs to be debated in the context of economics.

If this logic had been applied in Ireland at pretty much any time in the last thousand years then there wouldn't be a soul on the whole island!

Well, I'm 31. Married for 5.5 months. Pregnant for 4.5.
I'm no spring chicken and my husband is 5 yrs older than me, so it made sense not to wait too long before having the family we want.

But yes, every Tom, dick and Harry are pregnant. The pregnancy forum is bursting at the seams, the July one in particular is quite big.
Personally I know about 8/10 people who are expecting around the same time as me, and I know 6 people who have already given birth this yr.

I'm not sure of everyone else's reason, but mine is fairly straight forward.

Also, lack of opportunities for career progression for women right now (men too, of course). I know several women who decided to have kids because they wouldn't be going anywhere in work for the next 5/10 years anyway. These are women who wanted kids anyway of course but 'their career' was no longer the reason to put it off that it may have been a few years back.

At a certain age or time of your life you start noticing certain things. If you join the dots it makes sense.

Like that time when "loads of people started getting married" or "I am getting invited to lots of weddings" etc

When you are a lot older you will start noticing people you knew... dying.

    Don't panic.
