Looking at a 08 Civic Diesel... It looks good and drives really well ..Roomy comfortable and easy to run.... The problem is if I buy the thing will the tax go crazy in the next budget seeing as its a 2.2 ....?

Its €225 at the minute to tax but could that escalate to €1225.? Is this a case of a gamble ...? If there was a big hike in tax then the car will be worthless after me shelling out €11k

Its the only downside I can see... Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated !

Don't panic over the tax. They won't increase the lowest bands to anything resembling high.

That car has a very decent engine, nice interior and good specification however I found road noise and suspension noise unbearably loud for my liking and it harsh on poor roads.

Go for it, no car will escape the tax hike that's coming anyway.

I love mine, but I'm getting a company car, so I no longer need it.

They're great to drive and have plenty of poke where you need it. Frugal on diesel too, I get about 6l/100km on it, which is in or around 50mpg I think.

    Any questions, shout!

Good friend of mine has one and he's very happy with it. Very pokey too.

He did have to get the clutch changed under warranty though. It was a problem with the first ones I believe but they were fixed under warranty.

Not saying you are wrong in any way but isn't it specifically the BMW 520d which set sparks flying over the cheap tax?
If they hit those then would they not have to hit a 2.2 engine as well as it would be the same as the Accord 2.2 and that being a similar size to the 520?

I'd have thought they'd do it to be a mix of the value of the car and CO2.

I think its more cost than engine size that sets sparks flying.

€41k for an Accord is near enough a 520 price

A combination of original cost plus emissions would probably be the fairest way, so long as they don't go back to linking it to engine size it'll be fine.
The Accord ranges from 32k to over 40k with all the extra's ticked, like the 520 ranges from 43k to probably close to 60k with all it's extras ticked.
The new Civic diesel entry model is 24k, so even if they link to cost, it'll be no worse than anything else in its class.
