Rent allowance eligability - need to move out of mothers home

    Hey, here's my situation,

I'm in my mid 30's and I was unemployed, my mother let me move into her spare room until I found a job. 9 months later and no luck with a job but I did get a college place on a course which will last a little over 12 months, I qualify for keeping my benefits while on the course.

Now, my mother had no problem with me moving back on a temporary basis, but she is extremely unhappy for me to hang around here for the next 12 months and to be honest I'm too old for living with my mother, it's putting a strain on the family and I'll have to go somewhere soon, one way or the other.

Would I have any case for rent allowance since I'm not currently in rented accommodation? Would I be able to get on the housing list in these circumstances?

    Thanks.

From what I know, I'd say your best chance would be to go down to your CWO and get assessed as having a housing need. Once you have that, I think you can get RA.

You need to go to your Local Authority and make an application to be approved as being in need of social housing. You certainly have a right to apply. In theory, you are supposed to be approved for social housing before making application for Rent Supplement (given that you haven't been renting privately for 6 months of the past 12) but in posts on this subject recently it seemed as if some Community Welfare Officers would accept your app for Rent Supplement pending the outcome of your request to the local authority.
