You need a Satellite box too such as a sky box without the card unless the tv has a digital tuner built in

the website said it uses it but just want to be extra sure before going out to spend money on a dish

also it says it comes in through an aerial so would even a good indoor aerial do instead????

To get Saorview, you'd Need a Antenna (depending on location, basic rabbit ears should do fine)

    To get
    bbc
    channel 5
    itv
    e4
You'd Need a dish (or live VERY close to the uk)

is a guide on free to air.

Saorsat, (recieving sarview via satellite) has info here

It's impossible for most in this country to get Freeview even with an aerial on the roof

No. Read the zillion threads here all about the distinction between Saorview, Freeview Freesat & Free to Air.:(

    To answer your question.

Freeview is a name for the digital terrestrial Tv service received off an aerial in the UK.

You will not receive it in Dublin or Kerry or Galway. You might receive it as overspill from Northern Ireland IF you live near the border.

You will receive Saorview which is the Irish digital stations by just connecting an aerial(not a dish) to the back of the TV. It will then pick up RTE1, RTE2HD, RTE+1, TV3, TG4, 3e, RTE News NOw and RTE Jnr.

Freesat is the Satellite version of Freeview for the UK stations which you will pick up, but by connecting a satellite dish to a Freesat/Satellite/Combo box which in turn connects to your TV.

You need a satellite dish and a receiver for the English stations. If you are handy you could install it yourself. The hardware would cost you €100 for a combo box (that does both aerial and satellite) and €50 for a dish and cabling. Look in the terrestrial forum for example at the large Ferguson Ariva 120 combo thread.
