BIOS/RAM error

For the last few months, my PC has been hanging on NVRAM Checking on start up. Usually a restart or re-seating a stick of RAM solved the problem. Today however nothing works except leaving out a stick of RAM permanently. Straightforward enough it seems except that it will boot with either stick of RAM in either slot but just not both together.

    It's an Asus M2V-MX motherboard (latest BIOS) and 2 x 2GB DDR2 modules.

    Anybody any ideas? :(
