I've recently been getting JSB but its been stopped since I cannot work due to a bad back injury. So my local welfare office has asked me to apply for Disability allowance.

I understand that this process takes time and more than likely be refused.

In the meantime, what do I do regarding getting money? Will/can I get the dole until the DA comes through?

Kinda worried that I won't get anything in the meantime, as I've never been down this road before and no nothing about how the system operates.

If you are on a Jobseekers payment, you should apply for Disability Allowance while you are still in payment. That way, your Jobseekers payment will continue while your DA application is processed.

If you sign off, and then apply for Disability Allowance you will have to apply for Supplementary Welfare Allowance while you wait, which is paid at a lower rate and has fewer disregards for any other income that you might have coming in.

Hi there, you need to apply for Illness Benefit - then your payment simply transfers from JSB.

You only qualify for Disability allowance if your illness or injury is expected to last for 12 months.

"To qualify for Disability Allowance (DA) you must:

Have an injury, disease or physical or mental disability that has continued or may be expected to continue for at least one year"

If you have the PRSI contributions for Illness Benefit, then definitely this is the way to go. Illness Benefit is not means tested, so is much better option than Disability Allowance if you have any other kind of income, eg spouse working.

Illness Benefit will last for maximum of 2 years. If you're still on it after more than a year, and expect for your illness to last at least another year, you can apply for Invalidity Pension.

    Hi folks,

i had a operation just before xmas and applied from disability allowance as my surgeon and doctor tells me it will take a long time to get back to normal as i also developed sweets syndrome after surgery. I am still waiting on an approval, does anyone know if having surgery is applicable to getting disability allowance and how long does it take.

    thanks
