the OH is driving a 02 corsa its a 1.0 ecotec engine 3 cylinder chain driven engine, it has been well looked after by myself, it has close to 60k on it now and going perfect and just had it nct'd there last week...

the question is how are these engines as you approach the 90k-100k mark? the OH will be doing a fair bit more milage with work now so the miles will not be long totting up...

Im just thinking am I best maybe selling it now or should I keep it another year or so, by next test id say there will be close to 80 even 90k on it

Why would you sell when there is nothing wrong with it?
If well maintained it should easily cope with that level of mileage.

As far as I remember, timing chain in this engine can cause problems due to lack of servicing. I would use quality oil with shorter change intervals if you plan to put high mileage on it.

It's not worth a whole pile and the amount you'll loose by putting high miles on it won't effect it hugely

    Drive it on I say

As said above if serviced properly and on time these engines can do big mileage without any real issues. I've seen a couple of them with mileage approaching the 200k mark. The wise thing to do is get full value out of it.

As above, there is not reason that any engine will not last once maintained properly.

I had a 3 cylinder corsa years ago and put over 100k on it without issue and we have one on our books in work with 160k on it and still going well.

They have a reputation for being a bad engine but the only major engine mechanical issues I've seen on them are chain issues(caused by low oil, poor servicing) and head gasket failures(caused by water pump leaks and people not checking their coolant regularly), so if your looking after it properly then these won't effect you.

Yeah a couple people have commented that that engine gives trouble when it has accumulated a fair few miles, we have the car from 16k and I know it was well looked after then and I have serviced it well also...

What it is prob due is a coolant change which I might do this weekend, what im thinking is empty all the collant and try flush rad and engine a bit with a hose to clean out if thats the best way?

Ive done it like that on other cars. Just make sure heater matrix is open by putting the heater controls to the hottest and bleed it afterwords. A haynes manual is handy if you have one but not mission critical.

Well I have never seen a mechanical failure on these engines. Even the chains/tensioners normally just get very noisy if they are giving trouble, I've never seen one slip.

The head gasket is the most common failure but as I said, it is always a symptom of unchecked cooling leaks/issues.

The only other thing that the engine is a bit prone to is sensor/electronic part failures, coilpacks and crank sensors being the main ones.

A good engine. Sell it when it dies and not until then. Even I'm tempted to keep my old Corsa.

They slip the timing sometimes alright, but rarely do damage. We had one in last week that slipped a quarter turn on the exhaust cam. Put a new chain on it and it was fine.
