Switch off GPRS in smartphone

Just bought my first smartphone (Samsung Galaxy Mini) and have a few problems. Firstly I'm unable to figure out how to control use of G3. As a result I got through a bit of credit unexpectedly). I'll try to explain by asking questions:-

When going online how do I ensure I'm using WiFi (assuming I know I'm within range of selected connection) and not G3? Both seem to be at the same time, although I've found the way to switch WiFi off. Does the phone decide automatically which network to use?

What's the purpose of the free msg that sent automatically every 15 mins, described as "GPRS Basic Service". It contains approx 3k bytes?

Secondly, I'm aware of a number of applications (bloatware?) running which start automatically and can only be stopped individually. They include an e-mail service called "Hello!" for example. I've found references to rooting the phone but don't think I'm competent enough to try that. Assuming I'm stuck with these services, are they causing significant battery usage?

    Any advice appreciated,

    Many thanks.

i dont know about your phone, but though you might be on wifi it can still switch over to the network and you will be charged for this. it is that that you need to switch off or they will keep charging you

Settings > wireless settings > mobile network > do not use mobile network/Background data

This will make your phone stay offline until you enter a wifi zone, then it'll connect to the wifi (if it's turned on) and save your credit.

Get yourself advanced task killer from the Android Market, set it to kill all the apps you don't want starting up as these drain the battery quickly

Thanks for the quick response and the advice. Is WiFi turned off again when leaving a zone, by any chance?

If you want to make sure it does not come back on then change the INTERNET or DATA apn in settings> wireless to something meaningless like oompa.loompa instead of internet.operator.ie as now.

FFS NO, never, ever use a task killer. Android doesn't need them, they just cause problems. What you kill most likely starts again instantly costing you battery life not saving it.

No, it will be constantly probing (looking for a new network). Get a power widget, place it on your homescreen and turn it on and off when you need it.

Android has one built called "Power Control", it will look like this when placed on your homescreen. Place it on your homescreen, it's very handy. From left to right, the icons represent Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, background data syncing and screen brightness.

+1 to scrambling the APN suggestion

If you really don't need data and are sure you won't use it you can always ask your operator to disable it on their end, that way you're guaranteed to not use it.

Thanks for all the tips folks. I found a Power Switch widget and a switch for Mobile Data in the phone. They're now on the Home Screen. Definite improvement.

    Thanks again.
